“What cheap prepaid SIM cards are available in Spain?” This question comes up again and again and is absolutely understandable. Although roaming charges within the EU have now been abolished, using a local SIM card in Spain can make perfect sense.
If the stay abroad is longer than four months, the functions may be restricted by the domestic card provider. However, Spanish prepaid cards for surfing, working and making calls are also quite attractive for the duration of a vacation.
In this article, you will find out which mobile phone providers there are in Spain, what the individual offers cost, and where and how you can buy your prepaid SIM card.

You just have to fill in the “Dirección” field and enter there the name of the place/city in Spain. In “Area de búsqueda” you specify the radius in which you want to search. After pressing “Buscar” you will get the results.
Spain Internet Data SIM Card
A completely different model is offered to you with the Spain Internet data SIM cards that you can rent. To do this, first book your SIM card via spaininternet.net before your stay in Spain. There you enter the period in which you want to use the card, because the prices depend on it.
When you place your order, you also specify where in Spain you want the card to be delivered, for example, to a hotel or campsite. You can also have them sent to a PickUp Point and pick them up there. Shipping is free of charge. The SIM card is already activated, so you can insert and use it immediately. Thus, activation or configuration is not necessary.
You get 10 GB per day in 4G – 5G speed and pay the following prices:
- for up to five days you pay 5,00 €/ day
- from six days you pay 1,50 €/ day
Apart from the data SIM card, you can also rent a portable pocket hotspot at the following prices:
- for up to five days you pay 7,00 €/ day
- from six days you pay 2,00 €/ day
If you no longer need the SIM card and/or Pocket Hotspot, return all items in the included return package. Also, the return is not associated with any costs for you.
The networks used by the provider are Vodafone and Movistar. You can find all the detailed information about this offer at spaininternet.net.
Simyo
Simyo is not an independent network operator in Spain either, but uses the Orange network. The advantage here is that the desired tariff can be compiled independently. Here you will find the options: Ofertas prepago | Simyo. For €20.00, you get 100 GB of national data volume and unlimited calls.
If you have data volume left at the end of a month, it will be automatically carried over to the next month. And if you want to book a new data volume for 30 days before the end of the month, you can do that without any problems. If you still have data volume left at the end of your stay, you can also use the Simyo SIM card outside of Spain and thus use up the credit.
You can get a Simyo SIM card at various points of sale. You can find an overview here: Localiza tu tienda. From my personal experience, it works best in beep computer stores. Otherwise, you can also buy a Simyo SIM card in many Carrefour supermarkets or holaMOBIL stores.
Buy and top up a Spanish prepaid SIM card
To buy a Spanish SIM card (Spanish: Tarjeta SIM Prepago), you will need your passport. Unfortunately, the German identity card is not sufficient for the purchase. The number of your ID card is usually entered by the seller where the Spanish N.I.E. number is usually recorded.
What is also helpful when buying the SIM card is a spark of patience and perseverance. Usually, they know what information they need so you can take a prepaid SIM card with you. In individual cases, however, it may happen that someone claims that the offer is only valid for people residing in Spain. The only thing that helps is to persevere or, if necessary, to go to another store.
When you buy the SIM card, you can top it up directly with the amount you want so that you are covered for the time being. If you want to top up the Spanish SIM card with credit yourself later, you can do this at many supermarkets, gas stations or kiosks. If you do not speak Spanish, it is helpful to write a note in advance with your recharge request.
The Spanish word “recargar” means to recharge. Also, you must know the corresponding phone number you want to recharge and note the amount you want, as well as the provider. Example: “recargar 5 €, Teléfono 652385463, Simyo”. If you want to top up your Spanish SIM card online, this is currently only possible if you have a Spanish credit card.

tip

You can get around this by using a site like ding.com. I have personally used this several times and was completely satisfied with it. Within seconds, the booked credit was on my Simyo card. Depending on the amount of the recharge, Ding charges a fee for processing. For a charge of 20 €, it is about 2 €.
Network coverage in Spain
Movistar, Vodafone, Orange and Yoigo are the companies that operate the stand-alone mobile networks. Mobile communications providers such as Digi Mobil or Simyo also use these networks. You can check how good the network coverage actually is on these pages:
Conclusion – the most favorable provider
By and large, most prepaid SIM card offers are quite close to each other. I used a Simyo card both in Spain and in other European countries and was very satisfied with it. If you need less data volume because you only want to surf a bit, the other providers are also perfectly adequate.
