Camping in Augsburg: experience the center of Bavarian Swabia with a motorhome or caravan

In dialect, the Fugger city is called Augschburg, Aux and sometimes Datschiburg. Augsburg is the metropolis of the Bavarian administrative district of Swabia. If you are looking for a motorhome site or campsite for your vacation here, you will find what you are looking for in the city and the surrounding area. In this article you will also find information and tips on how and where you can spend your free time with activities and culture.

Camping and motorhome sites in and around Augsburg

In the city itself, there are three options for staying overnight in a motorhome, two motorhome sites and a campsite. But you can also park your camping vehicle in the neighboring towns and take public transport into the city. We introduce you to the possibilities of going on vacation as a camper in Augsburg.

RV park Wertach

Camping in Augsburg Pitch Wertach
The parking space on the Wertach is closest to the city center. You can also park here by the hour. Stefan Blanz

The site is located at the mouth of a canal in the Wertach. There are about 20 unrestricted pitches. Many areas are also suitable for motorhomes over 8 meters. Some pitches have steeper slopes, so that drive-on wedges or lifting supports are useful. There is electricity and a supply/disposal station. Pitch fees are paid via a machine that can only be fed with coins.

If you stand on the bank, you have a beautiful view of the city’s second largest river. Dogs are allowed here. There are numerous supermarkets and other stores in the area. However, it is relatively noisy. There is a crossroads next door that is a thoroughfare for emergency services and the canal water is also quite loud. The whole area does not always make a well-kept impression.

Mobile in the big city

Camping in Augsburg Tramway
There are good connections by streetcar. Stefan Blanz

Ultimately, proximity to the city center is only important when choosing a place for your vacation if it is to be the starting point for conquests on foot. Otherwise, you can use the streetcar connections – also in Königsbrunn and Friedberg – which will take you everywhere. Stadtwerke provides an overview of the lines and fares with a digital mobility advisor.

E-scooters are also an effective way of getting around the city. As the usage fees are charged by the minute via an app and online payment service, the electric scooters should be used in a planned and selective manner. The local newspaper provides an overview of e-scooter providers.
Bicycles are also a good means of transportation in Augsburg. There is a good infrastructure for cyclists in the city center.

Leisure tips for Augsburg fans (and all those who want to become one)

Olympic High Drain

Camping in Augsburg Hochablass
The Hochablass is located in the eastern part of Augsburg. Stefan Blanz

The Hochablass is a weir and canal system on the Lech in the Hochzoll district. Anyone who comes here enters a local recreation area with a high recreational value and at the same time a central monument of the Unesco World Heritage Water Management. You can cross the Lech on foot at the weir. This is where the water extraction of canal water began. The Hochablass is also known for the ice canal. In 1972, the Olympic kayaking competitions were held at the Hochablass. The ice channel is still in use today and you can watch kayakers training here all year round – even in winter! The Hochablass is also home to the Schwarze Kiste, an iconic kiosk that caters for walkers.

Swimming in the lakes on the Lech and in the city’s baths

Swimming is not recommended at the Hochablass or elsewhere. The Lech and the Eiskanal are dangerous waters in places and should not be used for swimming – there are too many dangers lurking, which have already claimed many victims. But the Hochablass also includes the Kuhsee, where you can swim. If swimming is your favorite, the Friedberger See is a great place to camp. Swimming and wakeboarding are among the immediate activities on offer here. The Weitmannsee in Kissing or the Mandichosee (Lechstaustufe 23) in Königsbrunn are further bathing lakes with sunbathing lawns close to the city. The whole family can also jump into the refreshing water at the campsites in the north of the city. In this article you will find the most beautiful campsites on German lakes.

However, there are also several outdoor pools in the city center and its districts. One of them stands out. If you want to experience the feeling of swimming in the canal, you can go to the Fribbe. The municipal outdoor pool is fed directly from the canal water from the Hochablass and will get you through the hot days bobbing in the water.

Camping in Augsburg Altes-Stadtbad
If you want to swim in winter, you should treat yourself to the unusual experience of the Altes Stadtbad. Stefan Blanz

It is one of the oldest surviving indoor swimming pools and is therefore also a remarkable Art Nouveau building – both inside and out. It was originally built so that all the city’s inhabitants could wash themselves. This is also a not insignificant aspect of camping – especially if you can also be captivated by the special atmosphere of this building.

Cycling and hiking in the city forest

Camping in Augsburg Ruhebank_am_Brunnenbach_bei_Augsburg-Wikimedia-Werner-Rebel
Here you have enough space to relax and enjoy nature. Stefan Blanz

Augsburg’s city forest is no ordinary forest, but with an area of almost 7700 hectares it is more than just a green lung. It is the largest forest in Bavaria, the second largest in Germany and covers around 20% of the city area. So it’s no wonder that it is a popular cycling and hiking region, especially in summer.

The Siebentischwald and Haunstetten areas are particularly attractive when it’s hot. This is because it is also a nature and water conservation area and is cooler compared to other forests. This is because many streams in the water management system flow through the urban forest and cool it down. This already begins in Königsbrunn, where the Lochbach stream 12 km south of the city heralds the course of the streams. The Brunnenbach and the Jägerbach are also artificial streams in the city forest. However, camping in the city forest is not possible. 10 idyllic trails for hiking in Germany incl. We have put together a list of camping tips for you in this article.

Celebrating and suffering in the city of soccer

The Fuggerstadt is also a soccer city. FCA plays in the 1st Bundesliga and helps to ensure that the city colors red, white and green remain present in the cityscape. Anyone who is enthusiastic about this sport can attend a match in the WWK Arena. If the arena is sold out, there is a special pub tip: the 11er in Dominikanergasse. This is where soccer enthusiasts meet up to share a beer and a ball. Sometimes it’s so full that the three screens are barely visible. But when the FCA scores a goal, the place shakes. Fans of other teams are also welcome when it’s time to watch: 11er: Football. Culture. Pub .

Culinary meeting places

The city center and the old town are full of culinary delights. Some of the classic inns and modern restaurants have been serving food here for centuries. The selection includes Café Eber on Rathausplatz, for example, which offers not only cakes but also homemade chocolates. The venerable Ratskeller serves traditional, regional cuisine and you can also sit outside on the Rathausplatz in summer. Of course, you can also do this in the beer garden, of which there are many in the Fuggerstadt.

Camping in Augsburg Brauhaus-Riegele
Discover regional delicacies in an inviting atmosphere. Stefan Blanz

The picnic on Moritzplatz is one of the breakfast hotspots. And in the old town, the Annapam and the Thing are the must-visit meeting places that have emerged from a left-liberal scene. Craft beer enthusiasts should definitely pay a visit to the Drunken Monkey. Near the main train station is the Brauhaus Riegele with its pub and the many brewing specialties of the house.

Camping in Augsburg City Market
The Augsburg City Market should definitely be on your itinerary. Stefan Blanz

Here you can find not only fresh and rare vegetables from the region, but also fruit, flowers, wines and international specialties. In addition to the outdoor stalls, there is also the Viktualienhalle and the Fleischhalle. Many Augsburgers spend their lunch break at the city market to treat themselves to an uncomplicated hot meal or to meet up with friends and acquaintances.

The most beautiful sights

Like all major cities, Augsburg has a multitude of sights to offer. Here you will find a selection of well-known sights in the city on the Romantic Road, as well as personal insider tips.

Camping in Augsburg Rathaus-Perlachturm

Elias Holl and the Renaissance city

Probably Augsburg’s best-known landmark is the town hall with the Perlachturm tower. The two buildings also stand for Elias Holl, the famous master builder who shaped Augsburg so much. There are other buildings by him and they stand for the heyday of the city of the Fuggers and Welsers in the 16th century. A symbol of this is the (baroque) Golden Hall, which is open to the public. You can sit in cafés on Rathausplatz in summer and visit the Christmas market in winter.

The Fuggerei: the oldest social housing estate in the world

The Fuggerei is internationally known as the oldest social housing estate in the world. It is a foundation set up by the wealthy Fugger family, who provide a home for those in need in return for a symbolic sum and three daily prayers. This foundation, which is also architecturally interesting, has been in operation for over 500 years. A little restraint towards the residents would be a good thing, as it is not a zoo. For on-site information, four museums offer insights into the past and present of the Fuggerei.

Augusta Vindelicum, the city of the Romans

Augsburg was already built by the Romans. They built a fort called Augusta Vindelicum on a hill at the confluence of the Lech and Wertach rivers in 15 BC. The town is therefore named after the Roman emperor Augustus. The settlement grew rapidly and was probably granted Roman city rights in the 1st century, which was soon followed by its status as the capital of the province of Raetia. This makes Augsburg one of the oldest cities north of the Alps. You can also find the remains of the old Roman baths at the cathedral. You can explore the historical background of antiquity in Elias Holl’s arsenal, which currently houses the collection of the Roman Museum.

The Unesco World Heritage Site Augsburg Water Management

Camping in Augsburg Wasserturm-Rotes-Tor
Four of the preserved water towers have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Augsburg Water Management System” since 2019. Stefan Blanz

If you walk through Augsburg, you will encounter countless water canals at every turn. They significantly shape the image of the city center; after all, there are more bridges here than in Venice. They create a special atmosphere, especially in the old town. They are the original reason for the prosperity of the former imperial city. As early as the 8th century, canals began to branch off from the Lech and Wertach rivers.

This canal system was continually expanded. There were water towers to transport the valuable water to the upper town, to equip craft businesses with drives or to operate cooling systems. The most important achievement, however, was the separation of industrial and drinking water. Augsburg’s magnificent fountains are also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Of particular interest is the area around the Red Gate with the fountain house and the water tower, as well as the old town with the Zirbelnuss bridge shown here, which stands for the separation of industrial and drinking water. If you want to discover culture and nature by motorhome at special UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Germany, then be sure to take a look at this article.

Industrialization and Bertold Brecht

Did you know that Rudolf Diesel built the first engine named after him here? This process is symbolic of the importance of the industrial city, which still characterizes the contrasting cityscape today. In literary terms, the tension between political and social justice also gave rise to the poet Bert Brecht, whose epic theater is still alive today. His ungracious relationship with his home town only led to a late appreciation by the bourgeoisie. Today you can relive his conquest of the boards of the world and the city in the Brechthaus.
