Firecracker-free regions in Germany
Every year you look for new ways to avoid firecrackers because your dog is afraid of them. Wild animals also suffer from firecrackers, but setting off fireworks is not banned nationwide. Fortunately, however, there are regions and campsites that do just that: New Year’s Eve without fireworks!
The North Sea and Baltic Sea, in particular various islands, are ideal for a relaxed turn of the year. On Amrum, Hallig Oland and Pellworm , the private setting off of fireworks is prohibited. On Sylt, there is an official fireworks display in Hörnum. So if you want to spend New Year’s Eve on the island, you should avoid this area and stay away from it.
In Sankt Peter-Ording, too, fireworks may only be fired at certain parts of the beach. The reason for this is the numerous buildings with highly flammable roofs, for example thatched roof houses. This regulation also applies in many other places on the North Sea and Baltic Sea. This region therefore tends to be quiet on New Year’s Eve. Click here for an overview of campsites in Sankt Peter-Ording.

National parks and nature reserves are another good destination. To protect wildlife, visitors are asked not to set off fireworks there.
These include, for example:
- Lüneburg Heath National Park
- Harz National Park
- Bavarian Forest National Park
- Black Forest National Park
Fireworks are completely prohibited in the Harz National Park. They may be permitted in the neighboring communities. However, if your accommodation is located in the immediate vicinity of the national park, it should be quite quiet there.
Not to be missed in the list are the historic towns where fireworks pose a danger to the old buildings. Therefore, it is prohibited in the town center or old town of many cities, such as:
- Goettingen
- Northeim
- Wernigerode: Old town
- Quedlingburg: Old Town
- Bad Gandersheim: Old town
- Tuebingen
- Constance
- Rothenburg ob der Tauber
- Hamelin
As you can see, there are places in Germany where there is little to no gunfire. However, no one can guarantee that it will be 100% quiet there. You should therefore always keep your four-legged friend on a lead in such regions before and after New Year’s Eve. His safety comes first.

Emergency alternatives for a firecracker-free New Year’s Eve
To get a place on a firecracker-free campsite, you need to book early. They are in high demand among dog owners and are usually gone in no time.
So here are a few alternatives for you to spend a stress-free New Year’s Eve with your dog.
- Book a room in an airport hotel, as the area around an airport is a firecracker-free zone. Another plus point is that the rooms are usually soundproofed.
- Ask at the airport whether you are allowed to stay in the waiting area with your four-legged friend. Some airports allow this.
- Take your dog to a highway in good time before the fireworks. There is usually hardly any traffic there and you can keep your furry friend away from the firecrackers.
- Look for accommodation in a national park. The earlier you look for it, the better your chances of getting one.
- How about vacation accommodation at a riding stables? Out of consideration for the horses, fireworks are generally not set off there. Dogs are also often welcome guests.
- Some vacation parks such as Landal, EuroParcs and Villapark Hof van Salland are also firework-free.

A stress-free start to the new year with your dog
Fear is not a pleasant feeling, quite the opposite. This makes it all the more important to help your dog get through New Year’s Eve stress-free. There are various ways to do this. For example, noise sensitivity can be trained well with noise CDs. However, this should only be done under the expert guidance of a trainer.
Here are a few last-minute tips for you:
- Keep your dog on a lead
A few days before New Year’s Eve and afterwards, you should only keep your dog on a lead. For particularly panicky animals, a special safety harness is recommended to prevent them from escaping. - Mental exercise makes you tired
Play a few games with your dog at home or on a walk to keep him mentally challenged. Search games and tasks that require your four-legged friend to think are good for this. You can find ideas on the website of Fun with your dog. - Ensure peace and quiet
Close all windows and lower the blinds. You can leave quiet music or the TV on to block out outside noises. - Chewing helps against stress
Chewing calms, as does licking. Just before midnight, offer your dog an attractive chewy object or give him a deliciously filled Kong that he can lick. - Offer social support
Do not withhold attention from your dog if he is afraid. It will not be intensified if you talk to him in a friendly manner or stroke him. By stroking him, his body releases the so-called “cuddle hormone” oxytocin, which reduces stress hormones. However, if he finds it unpleasant, you should leave it alone. - Let him decide for himself
Anything that is good for him is allowed. Let your dog decide where he wants to be, whether it’s on your couch, in the bathroom or under the bed. Don’t force him to do anything and don’t lure him out of a hiding place. If he feels safe there, he is allowed to be there. - Stay calm
Make sure you don’t let your dog’s anxiety and nervousness get to you. Targeted relaxation exercises are a good way to stay calm yourself and be there for your four-legged friend. - Food supplements and pheromones
Special collars, sprays or plugs for the socket with artificial pheromones help some dogs to relax a little. There are also various natural supplements that have a calming effect. It is best to discuss this with your vet.
Important to know: Under no circumstances should you give your dog a drug containing acepromazine. Although it will make him calm on the outside, he will be paralyzed. He is fully aware of the noises, but cannot do anything about them. This makes his fear all the greater.
Conclusion
Fireworks are banned in some regions and cities, so you can enjoy a firework-free New Year’s Eve with your dog. Make a reservation in good time to get a place on a fireworks-free campsite. With good preparation and supportive measures, you and your dog will hopefully have a stress-free New Year. I’ll keep my paws crossed for you!
