Prepaid SIM card in Greece: making calls and surfing abroad

Greece is an exciting destination. It not only has an incredibly fascinating history, but also impresses with its scenic diversity. It is a destination that offers you plenty of opportunities for both relaxation and activities.

If you don’t want to miss out on surfing the internet during your stay, you can buy a Greek prepaid SIM card. To help you find the right one, I have compiled the most important information for you in this article.

Greek prepaid SIM cards at a glance

Even in Germany, it is difficult to keep track of the numerous offers. Basically, this is hardly possible and involves a lot of research. You definitely don’t want to do that on your vacation.

That’s why I’m going to list the three cheapest Greek providers and also tell you where you can buy the respective tickets.

Vodafone

At Vodafone you will find a single offer with 13 GB data volume and 300 free minutes, the tariff is called Vodafone International . The term is 25 days and costs 10.50 euros. Call credit is not included with this offer.

Disadvantage

The exact conditions, for example for topping up and other prices, are listed on the website, but only in Greek. This makes it difficult for foreign customers to obtain information online in advance.

It is best to ask directly in a store, of which there is usually one in larger towns. Unfortunately, the search for stores on the website only works in Greek.

Nova

Nova has a much more attractive offer compared to Vodafone. With the Mobile Internet On the Go Card you currently get 30 GB for 25 euros. The validity period is 60 days. Recharging is easy and can be done via this link.

  • First enter the Greek telephone number of your prepaid SIM card and an e-mail address.
  • Immediately afterwards you will receive an e-mail with a code that you enter on the website.
  • In the next step, select the desired top-up amount and the payment method (PayPal or credit card). After the payment process, the new credit is immediately available to you.

On this page you can search for Nova stores near you.

My personal experience with the Nova card

When I wanted to buy this package, some employees were overwhelmed and didn’t know it. Some people claimed that it was only available with a contract, although I was able to show the link to the website on my smartphone.

In this case, my only option was to go to another Nova store and try my luck again. In the end, I got a package with 30 GB for 25 euros, which I was happy with.

Experiences of our readers

  • Our reader Andreas reports that he bought a prepaid card in a Nova store in the Peloponnese and received 260 GB for 14 days at a price of just 20 euros. After the two weeks, he has the option of topping up 50 GB within 4 weeks of purchase. The contract runs via Free2Go, the top-up via the associated app. Our research has shown that this is probably a limited-time offer from Free2Go (as of March 17, 2025). But it is certainly worth checking the Free2Go app first to see if there are currently any attractive offers for you before buying a Nova prepaid card.

Conclusion

The offer itself is attractive, but the purchase may require a little patience. The staff in the Nova stores mostly spoke good English.

Cosmote

Cosmote offers you under the offer Cosmokarta offers you various options for using data volume as a prepaid card.

  • Giga Month
4GB data volume for 30 days, 8.50 euros
  • Giga Week
6GB data volume for 7 days, 4 euros
  • Giga Weekend
6GB for one weekend, 2 euros
  • Giga Day
6GB data volume for 24 hours, 1.50 euros

There are also the so-called UNLIMITED GB bundles, for which the following conditions apply:

  • Unlimited Giga Week
unlimited data volume for 7 days, 6.50 euros
  • Unlimited Giga Weekend
Unlimited data volume for a weekend, 2.50 euros
  • Unlimited Giga Day
unlimited data volume for one day, 2 euros

You can load new credit onto your prepaid SIM card online with a top-up card or go to a Cosmote or Germanos store. You can find the exact conditions of the Cosmokarta here.

If this data volume is not enough for you, there is another package called Cosmote 4G Pocket Wi-Fi calls. This includes 50 GB of data volume, valid for six months, at a price of 99 euros including a pocket router.

You can also find Cosmote stores in almost every major town. On this page you can search in advance for a store or partner store that sells Cosmote.

Buy a Greek prepaid SIM card

To buy a Greek prepaid SIM card, all you need is your identity card or passport. It also doesn’t hurt if you pack a little serenity and patience, because in Greece the principle is: siga, siga – always take it easy!

Here too, the telephone business is a hotly contested market with constantly changing offers. As a result, it can happen that promotions are advertised on the website, but the employees in the stores know nothing about them.

If you are unsuccessful with your request in a store, it won’t help to get upset and insist on your rights – that doesn’t go down well with the Greeks. It’s best to just accept it and go to another store.

It generally makes sense to have your card activated directly on site and have it explained to you how you can check your credit and top it up.

The network coverage

In addition to the price, network coverage also plays a role when purchasing a card.
You can see how good the coverage is with the individual providers by clicking on the following links.

Conclusion – the most favorable provider

Compared to other European countries, the prices for prepaid SIM cards in Greece with a lot of data volume are quite high. It is also not always easy to find a well-trained contact person directly in a store. However, this problem is probably common to all countries.

On the plus side, most of the staff speak English, so communication should at least be possible. Once you have purchased the card you want, all that remains is for me to wish you a pleasant stay in Greece.
