• Collapsible bottles in normal bottle shape: This variant of the collapsible bottle is particularly common. It looks like a normal drinking bottle and can be folded up when empty. These bottles are quite stable, but they cannot be folded up as small as the next variant.

• Foldable pouch-shaped bottles: The pouch-shaped version, also known as a drinking bag or hydration bladder, is very popular with many users. These models resemble a very flexible plastic bag and are therefore naturally not as stable as folding bottles. However, drinking bags can usually be folded up very small when empty, making them ideal for messing up.

The selection of collapsible drinking bottles is now quite large. To ensure that the collapsible bottle is ideally suited to your needs, you should therefore pay attention to a few points when purchasing.

Material

On the one hand, a collapsible bottle should be stable and must not tear. On the other hand, it should give and be flexible so that it can be folded as small as possible. The material therefore plays a major role.

Most models are made of either plastic or silicone. Silicone bottles are usually particularly flexible and stable. Plastic bags, on the other hand, can be folded up very small and are therefore particularly suitable for space-saving storage in a rucksack, but are not as sturdy.

Free of harmful substances

Make sure that the model you choose is free from harmful substances and plasticizers. The collapsible bottle should be BPA-free and not smell of plastic. The silicone used must also be food-safe to avoid complications or allergic reactions.

Leakage safety

Of course, a foldable water bottle should definitely be leak-proof. Collapsible bags are generally more unstable and therefore more likely to leak than collapsible drinking bottles. The closing mechanism also plays a role: a hinged closure is ideal for sports or outdoor activities.

Filling quantity & size

The capacity of collapsible bottles usually varies between 500 milliliters and 2 liters. Smaller models are of course lighter and take up considerably less space. However, 500 milliliters is not enough on a cycling or hiking tour. You should choose at least a 1-liter bottle, but 1.5 or 2 liters would be even better.

When choosing the right size, also consider the use of the bottle: will you be using it in places where you can refill it (e.g. during sports or at a festival) or are you more likely to be hiking and need to stay hydrated for many hours?

Weight

The weight depends on the filling quantity and the material of the bottle. The smaller the filling quantity, the lower the weight. There are also differences in the material. However, this usually only involves a few grams. If you want to use the collapsible bottle for outdoor activities in particular, you should make sure that it weighs as little as possible.

Cleaning

Collapsible bottles should be easy to clean. The largest possible opening helps here. Therefore check,

whether the opening of the bottle is large enough to be cleaned with a brush. Ideally, the bottle is dishwasher-safe, which makes cleaning easier.
