Foldable, lightweight, weatherproof and a small pack size: that’s what a camping table should be!
Camping table: what is important when choosing one
A camping table is the ideal companion for your camping trips and travels. You can use it perfectly for a cozy outdoor meal, as additional storage space or as a side table for celebrations in the house and garden. It can be a dining area, work surface, storage space and playground all in one.
Camping tables are primarily characterized by the fact that they are foldable and can be stowed away in your motorhome, van or car to save space. They can also be set up and taken down quickly and are suitable for uneven terrain.
What types of camping tables are there?
Camping tables are available in many variants, three of which are the most common:
- Classic folding camping tables with fixed table tops
- Rolling camping tables with rollable tabletop
- so-called suitcase tables in suitcase format, which often have integrated chairs or small benches
Folding tables are relatively quick and easy to assemble and disassemble, although “assemble” is actually the wrong word, as you only need to unfold the legs under the table top. On some folding tables, part of the tabletop can also be folded down, making the table even more space-saving. Normally, however, the table top consists of only one fixed part.
Roller tables have a table top that consists of individual slats and can be easily rolled up. The rolled-up table top can then be stowed away with the table legs in a carrying bag to save space. Roller tables are very popular due to their small pack size. Depending on the quality and model, however, they are also somewhat more unstable than tables with a fixed table top. In addition, assembly and disassembly takes a little longer than with a folding table.
Suitcase tables can be packed in suitcase format and are therefore easy to transport. Depending on the model, they often even have integrated chairs or small benches. Thanks to a special design, case tables assemble almost automatically after opening.
Folding tables are not classic camping tables and are particularly popular with hikers or backpackers, as they are particularly light and easy to transport. They are usually made of nylon and a lightweight aluminum frame and are simply unfolded for setting up. Due to their low weight and construction, these tables are nowhere near as stable as a table made of wood or plastic.
Which is the best camping table?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as it depends entirely on your individual situation. Are you traveling by car? Then your table should have the smallest possible pack size. Or are you traveling in a motorhome with the whole family? Then you need a large table that seats everyone. If you like to travel to very sunny areas, the camping table should be able to cope with strong sunlight and not get hot; if you are traveling in the north, then a table that is resistant to moisture is the best choice.
What makes a good camping table
A good camping table, which will ideally last you for many years, is characterized by several features:
- It is foldable.
- It is wind and weatherproof.
- It is UV-resistant.
- It is easy to care for.
- It is hard-wearing and resilient.
- It has adjustable legs and / or top.
- It is easy to assemble.
You should pay attention to these criteria when buying
To find a camping table that suits you perfectly, there are several criteria that you should definitely pay attention to when buying.
The material
Camping tables are usually made of wood, plastic or aluminum. The materials differ in terms of weight, weather resistance and maintenance requirements.
- Wooden camping tables: Are not made entirely of wood. Only the table top is predominantly made of wood, as a wooden table frame would simply be too heavy. Wood has the advantage that it compensates better for solar radiation and does not heat up as much. However, it is more susceptible to weathering and can become rotten if exposed to too much moisture and sun. To prevent this, wooden tables should have a treated surface and should also be regularly treated with a wood preservative. They are therefore somewhat more maintenance-intensive. Wooden camping tables are also somewhat heavier than plastic and aluminum tables. However, they are also very stable, robust and have a high-quality finish overall.
- Aluminum camping tables: Aluminum primarily impresses with its low weight and good weather resistance. Various weather influences such as rain, sun or cold hardly harm an aluminum camping table. However, the tabletop can get very hot in strong sunlight. With inexpensive aluminium tables, the material may also oxidize. All parts should therefore be galvanized.
- Plastic camping tables: Plastic camping tables are inexpensive, lightweight and, with good quality and workmanship, also stable. In addition, they do not heat up when exposed to sunlight. However, they fade in the sun over time. In addition to the visual appearance, durability also suffers. This is because plastic is not weather-resistant and becomes brittle, cracked and more susceptible to damage when exposed to too much sun. It is therefore advisable to use a tablecloth for plastic tables. Otherwise, you should make sure that the table is made of a UV-resistant material. Quality is also important: cheap plastic tables are often unstable and not very durable.
- Bamboo camping tables: Bamboo camping tables are in vogue. The material is very environmentally friendly as it is a renewable raw material. Bamboo is also stable and weather-resistant. It is usually combined with aluminum, i.e. the table top is made of bamboo and the frame is made of aluminum. However, bamboo tables require good care as they are quite delicate. In addition, the material used often has long transportation routes behind it, which in turn limits the eco-factor.
The size & shape
The size of the camping table plays an important role. If you are traveling as a couple or alone, then you are well served with a small table. However, the more people you have, the larger the table surface should be.
Larger table models are designed for four, six or even eight people. The dimensions range from 50 x 48 x 61 centimetres for small tables to around 185 x 70 x 75 centimetres for large family tables.
When choosing the size, bear in mind that everyone should have enough space to eat and that you also need space to place pots or bowls.
Depending on your preference and local conditions, you can choose a rectangular, square or round table.
The pack size
In addition to the size when assembled, you should pay particular attention to how big the table is when dismantled and folded. Think carefully about how much space you have available in your car/van/caravan/motorhome and where you want to stow the folded table.
The weight
The weight of the camping table plays a central role. If you plan to change locations frequently on your trip, you will be glad of every gram less if you have to load and unload the table frequently. However, if you are going to be in one place for a long time, you can also choose a heavier table (which is usually more stable).
Always bear in mind the load weight of your car/van/caravan/motorhome. Your vehicle must not exceed a specified maximum weight including passengers and luggage.
Height adjustability
Height-adjustable camping tables are not a must, but they allow more flexibility. They can be used both as a laptop table and as a children’s table and can be adapted to any situation. For taller people, they also allow more individual legroom. While some models only allow two different settings, others are even infinitely adjustable.
The stability
Of course, a camping table must be stable and also stand securely. It should be able to withstand a lot, including heavier weights such as water canisters or cooking pots. The table should also be able to withstand a bump without tipping over. Make sure you have stable legs and a sturdy frame as well as a wide base. These generally prevent slight tipping over.
You can also use the price as an indication of stability. High-quality and heavier models are usually more stable in their overall construction than simple folding tables in the lower price range.
The load capacity
Always observe the maximum load capacity of the camping table. It tells you the maximum number of kilograms you can load on the table so that it does not collapse under the weight. If you are traveling with the whole family, the table should be able to withstand the weight of full pots or pans as well as plates, cutlery, glasses and bottles of drinks. Simple folding tables often reach their limits here. However, if you only want to use the table as a side table or PC table, a low load capacity is sufficient.
Assembly and dismantling
It should be possible to set up a camping table without tools. Assembly and disassembly should also not take too long and should be possible in just a few minutes. Depending on whether you are looking for a simple folding table or a sturdy large model, you will need more or fewer handles.
The equipment
In addition to simple camping tables, which only consist of a table top on a table frame, there are also tables with special features. Some models have adjustable table legs that compensate for uneven floors. Others have a small net underneath the table top as additional storage space. There are also camping tables with castors mounted under the table legs so that they can be easily rolled. Many tables also have integrated handles for easier transportation and a carrying bag for practical storage.
The care
The camping table should be easy to clean and simple to wipe down so that it requires little maintenance. Wooden models are particularly high-maintenance, as the wood must be treated with a wood preservative at regular intervals to prevent damage.
Camping chairs & camping table – Think combined!
It’s not a rare phenomenon: someone decides on a good camping table and good camping chairs and then realizes that they don’t fit together at all. Or that the existing camping chairs do not match the new table in terms of height or function. To prevent this from happening to you, it is best to buy both in combination or test whether the camping furniture combination fits together beforehand. So if you already have either a camping table or camping chairs, it is advisable to measure them precisely and match these dimensions to the new camping furniture.
