Water canisters come in different sizes with a capacity of 3.5 to 60 litres. A large canister is particularly practical for camping, as it is your water supply in the motorhome. By the way, there are also different shapes and even foldable models that can be stored in a particularly space-saving way. Let’s take a closer look at this topic.
What is a water canister?
Let’s start with the basic question of what a water canister is all about. We are talking about a larger container in which water is stored so that you have access to water at all times. Of course, you can also put other liquids like juice or wine in such a container. The canisters come in different sizes or with different capacities so that you have access to enough water when there is no mains water available. A water canister is especially useful when camping.
What types of water containers are there?
As already indicated, not all water canisters are the same. Not only do they come in different sizes, but also in very different shapes. From round to square to foldable models, everything is available. So you are optimally equipped for your next trip.
Square water canisters
The most common are the square water containers in the shape of a cuboid. They have a solid shape and are usually made of polyethylene or a similar plastic. Most models have a practical carrying handle on the top and a screw cap. This allows you to refill water whenever you are at a suitable water source. Often a small tap is included, which you can attach instead of the cap. If necessary, you can simply operate it and draw off the desired amount of water. There are hardly any limits to the volume. There are small, compact 5-litre canisters, larger 10-litre models or 20 to 30-litre versions.
Round water canister
In addition to the square version, you can also opt for a round water canister. This has no corners and looks like a barrel. You can often find the round version as a water dispenser in shops. Of course, round models are also suitable for home use or camping. They are also made of BPA-free plastic and can hold between 5 and 30 litres of water, depending on the model. For easy use, the round version usually comes with a small tap.
Foldable water canister
Next, I would like to introduce you to the foldable water canisters. As the name suggests, they are easy to fold so that you can store them in a space-saving way. We can divide them again into two groups: the water containers with accordion system and the soft, completely foldable ones. With the first type, you can simply press the canister together so that small folds (similar to an accordion) are created. If you want to fill the canister with water again, you simply pull it apart again. With the other version, the plastic is so soft that you can simply fold up the unfilled water tank. This version is also ideal for trekking tours, as the canister can even be stowed in a backpack.
XXL water canister
If you want to collect and store a particularly large amount of water in the canister, you can also opt for an extra-large container. These are available with a capacity of up to 60 litres. If you are far away from civilisation and a drinking water source for several days, an XXL water canister can be really practical. However, you should bear in mind that such a large container also takes up a lot of space and is quite heavy when filled.
Foldable or fixed canister – what are the advantages and disadvantages?
If you can’t quite decide whether you want a collapsible or a flat water canister, you can weigh up the different advantages and disadvantages. A rigid canister is usually more stable and somewhat more durable than a foldable one. In addition, most models are equipped in such a way that you can easily stack them on top of each other. Nevertheless, they naturally take up considerably more space than a foldable model. Especially in a small camper van or on a trekking trip, the size is particularly important and only the foldable water canister comes into question.
Why do I need a water canister?
In general, large water containers are a practical purchase, as you can store a lot of water with them. Thanks to your water canister, you don’t have to do without your fresh coffee in the morning when camping, for example, and you can rinse your cup directly afterwards. You can cook a portion of noodles wherever you are or fill up your water tank in the camper van. As you can see, a water canister is a great added benefit, especially when camping. Of course, you can also use the canister instead of a water tank, it all depends on your needs. The water canister can also be used in the house or garden as a source of fresh drinking water.
Material and chemicals: You should always pay attention to this
When choosing the right water canister, it is important to pay attention to the material. Since you are buying the water canister to have clean water for drinking and preparing food, it should definitely be made of a safe material. When making your choice, make sure that the canister is declared food-safe. More precisely, it means that the water, although it comes into contact with the canister, can be drunk without hesitation. Food-safe plastic, such as polyethylene, does not give off any odour or even taste to the water. It is also important that the water canister is free of the plasticiser BPA and other harmful substances.
Cleaning: The shape of the water canister is important
When choosing a canister, it is advisable to make sure that it is easy to clean. Even if you only fill it with water, a water container must be cleaned after a certain period of time. If the cap is big enough, there should be no problems. A very small cap like a drinking bottle makes it almost impossible for you to reach certain places. In general, it is advisable to fill the water canister two-thirds full with water at about 60 degrees Celsius. Citric acid, for example, can be used as a cleaning agent. Leave the mixture to soak in for about a day. Alternatively, you can also opt for special water cleaning tablets.

In this case, you can either buy large gallons at the supermarket and decant them, or you can buy a water filter for your camper. With such a filter, you can keep bacteria and possible pollutants out of the water and have permanently clean drinking water. A pump that you can put on the screw cap of the canister is also very practical.

The price of a water container depends primarily on the size and the material used. You can get a small 3.5 or 5 litre canister for less than 10 euros. For 10 to 20 litres, you will pay between 10 and 20 euros, while larger models from 30 to 60 litres cost between 20 and 40 euros.
