The world of caravans is as diverse as caravan owners themselves. Year after year, clever designers dream up new extras - from simple upgrades to individual components and accessories, right through to complete interior overhauls. Some manufacturers are even daring enough these days to bring some color into the mix, saying goodbye to uniform white or baroque charm.

This isn't exactly a new trend. Experimental designers and engineers have been doing impressive work for years. Not all of these innovative models managed to establish themselves on the market - but they still paved the way for other exciting developments and proved there's still plenty of room to push design and features further!

De Markies (The Awning) by Eduard Böhtlingk

Back in 1985, Dutch architect and designer Eduard Böhtlingk created a stunning "unfolding" caravan. While the ready-to-drive version measures just 4.50 by 2.00 meters, its unique accordion-like extension gives it generous interior space once set up. Böhtlingk deservedly won the Rotterdam Design Prize's audience award in 1996 for this invention, and since 2013 the model has been part of the "Urban Campsite" in Amsterdam.

Cricket Trailer

When it comes to modern, extravagant design, the Cricket Trailer definitely belongs near the top of the list. It's available in two versions - Standard Cricket and Sport Edition - and thanks to its aluminum build, it's a real lightweight. According to the manufacturer, the caravan weighs just 660 kilograms, which, combined with its aerodynamic shape, is said to result in remarkably low fuel consumption. Apparently, even small four-cylinder cars can tow the Cricket Trailer without any trouble. Fuel efficiency and aerodynamics aside - this "little Texan" is definitely a visual highlight!

Opera Camper by YSIN (Your Suite In Nature)

This folding caravan was modeled after the Sydney Opera House and takes luxury and usability to a whole new level: features include electrically adjustable beds, LED lighting, a fridge, a shower, and... a ceramic toilet! Unfortunately, the Opera Camper is no longer in production, but rumor has it you might still spot one out on the road...

Go! by SylvanSport

With this trailer combo, practicality comes first. The Go! can be used as a classic sleeping tent, but it also doubles as a way to transport bikes, motorcycles, kayaks, or quads. Made entirely of aluminum and built to ergonomic standards, this little guy has already picked up several awards and gotten media attention - including a mention in "Men's Journal" and National Geographic's "Best of Adventure Gear".
