Carawater water filter systems for more self-sufficiency and sustainability in motorhomes

Clean water in a motorhome is essential for health, comfort and independence on the road. Whether you’re camping in the great outdoors or on a campsite, the quality of the water determines whether you can drink, cook and shower without worrying.

Carawater is a water filter system that can be used both in terms of self-sufficiency and sustainability. According to the manufacturer, it is able to treat 99.99 percent of the water on board a motorhome five times.

The Carawater water filter system uses the latest filter technologies to ensure clean water from filling to withdrawal. The focus is on high flow rates, efficient filtration and a long service life.

AUTARX system

Technically, the Carawater water filter system is made up of five filters which – starting with solids – sieve the water ever more finely. Naturally, a more powerful water pump is required to feed the process water into the filter system. It is installed after the first filter, which binds all solids and thus also prevents the water pump from clogging.

This is followed by activated carbon, membrane, lime and UVC filtration. This is a process in which smaller and smaller particles are filtered out. Finally, the last germs are destroyed with UV light.

The AUTARX system from Carawater therefore enables gray water to be recycled to drinking water quality, so that the fresh water tank can be used up to ten times without having to worry about the water quality. It goes through a five-stage filtration process:

  1. External sediment filter: removes coarse impurities; the transparent filter housing allows visual inspection and easy cleaning or replacement of the filter insert.
  2. Activated carbon filter: Removes about 99 percent of free chlorine, chlorinated solvents, aromatic substances, pesticides and other organic compounds larger than 5 micrometers, resulting in better tasting and smelling water.
  3. Low-pressure membrane: With a pore size of 0.0001 micrometers, particles larger than water molecules are retained and discharged into the wastewater, while clean water is allowed to pass through.
  4. Additional activated carbon filter: Additional cleaning of the filtered water before it enters the fresh water tank.
  5. Germ barrier: A membrane serves as a barrier against microorganisms and ensures the highest water quality.

A flow meter integrated into the system indicates the filtered water volume and signals when a flush or filter change is required. Flushing takes place with around 20 liters of clean water after filtration of 600 to 1,000 liters, depending on the model.

The filter needs to be changed after 6,000 to 10,000 liters, whereby two to five filters can be accommodated in one unit (Filtradoc Highflow L) and, according to the manufacturer, allow a flow of up to 60,000 liters depending on the size. Up to 12,000 liters are specified for filling filters upstream of the pump.

The AUTARX system is available in different versions:

  • Basic: capacity of up to 15 liters per hour, compact dimensions of 41 x 22.5 x 12 cm.
  • MaxFlow: capacity of up to 30 liters per hour, same dimensions as the Basic model.
  • Plus: capacity of up to 60 liters per hour, dimensions of 45 x 25.5 x 14 cm.

FILTRADOC series

Carawater offers the FILTRADOC series in three sizes for the filtration of fresh water:

  • S version: Three-stage filtration with a capacity of up to 4.8 liters per hour; filter change every 12,000 liters.
  • M version: capacity of up to 7 liters per hour; filter change after 30,000 liters.
  • L version: capacity of up to 9.5 liters per hour; filter change after 60,000 liters.

Filtration includes sediment filtration, activated carbon filtration to remove chlorine, organic compounds, heavy metals, pharmaceutical residues and microplastics as well as ultrafiltration with a 99.9999 percent reduction of bacteria such as E. coli and legionella.

UV-C LED disinfection

In addition, Carawater offers the FILTRADOC UV-C LED, a water disinfection unit that uses the latest UV-C LED technology to effectively kill germs and bacteria and thus further improve water quality.

The Carawater filtration systems are designed to work without the use of chemical additives, making them an environmentally friendly and sustainable solution for travelers who value clean and safe water.

Price and availability

Carwater costs between 1,800 and 2,500 euros, depending on the system.
