Compact caravan becomes a luxury home: how this handy trailer turns into an XXL mobile home

A compact trailer that easily maneuvers through narrow village streets, steep mountain passes, and tight pitches – and transforms at your destination into a spacious home with room for up to six people. What sounds unusual at first glance is already a reality.

At the last Caravan Salon, Nele visited the CarWo (KaVo Caravan und Wohnmobile) stand and talked with owner Frank about the innovative slide-out caravans from French manufacturer Beauer. The result is a mobile space concept that redraws the line between classic caravanning and stationary living comfort.

The telescopic mechanism in detail

Beauer's caravan models rely on a clever slide-out system. The individual body segments slide into each other while you're driving.

Once you've arrived at your pitch, the living space doubles thanks to an accordion-style extension. The static base is a construction of welded aluminum tubular frames.

The star of the show was the X6 model, which celebrated its official world premiere at the trade fair. While driving, the vehicle stays fairly compact with a total length of 7.20 meters including the drawbar (6.00 m body length), a height of 2.67 meters, and a driving width of just 2.15 meters.

Once set up, the total width grows to an impressive 3.60 meters thanks to the side slide-outs. For comparison: a conventional caravan with similar interior space usually measures well over eight meters in length and comes in at 2.33 meters of driving width.

A flexible mobile home instead of a fixed tiny house

The design of the extended Beauer vehicles invites comparisons with modern tiny houses. At trade fairs, it became clear that many interested buyers are specifically looking for an alternative to a fixed mini house. One key legal advantage: as a registered caravan, the vehicle doesn't need a standard building permit to be set up.

Still, both Frank and Nele advise caution if you're planning to use the caravan long-term on private property. For extended stays, it's always worth taking a quick trip to the local building authority to check the rules.

For campers and freelancers who value location independence but still don't want to give up spatial comfort, the trailer remains a flexible solution. Alongside the X6 (designed for up to 6 people), the manufacturer also offers the more compact X4 (for up to 4 people) as well as the flagship X8 (for up to 8 people).

Thoughtful interior and standout features

Inside the vehicle, the bright choice of materials and build quality stand out. The central living area remains fully usable even when the caravan is retracted, offering a spacious L-shaped seating area plus kitchen. Color combinations of black, white, and gray with subtle wood elements create a modern atmosphere and leave room for your own decorative touches.

Standard equipment includes a sink with a 2-burner gas cooker (induction available as an option), a 157-liter Dometic compressor fridge (12V/220V), and a 100 Ah lithium onboard battery. The bathroom features a shower (70 × 80 cm), an electric 6-liter water heater, a Thetford cassette chemical toilet, and a handy cold-water outdoor shower.

A real highlight is the large panoramic sliding window made of real glass in the living room: the lower wall section folds outward to become a small veranda, while the window itself opens upward.

The sleeping areas are located in the extended segments. Bedroom one comes standard with a double bed (160 × 200 cm). The second room can be configured individually – whether as bunk beds, another double bed, a mobile office, or a dressing room. If needed, the seating area in the living space can also be converted into an additional sleeping spot for two people.

Technical specs of the Beauer X6 at a glance

Calculating your payload reserves correctly

With a permissible gross weight of 1,800 kg, the Beauer X6 starts off on solid ground. In the fully equipped version shown here, the ready-to-drive weight comes to 1,700 kg, leaving a remaining payload of 100 kg.

Keep in mind that this figure already includes factory-fitted extras like air conditioning, a solar system, a mover (remote-controlled parking aid), an awning, and a bike rack – equipment that eats heavily into the payload on many competing models.

The ready-to-drive weight also assumes a full water tank. If you travel with an empty tank or skip a few of the heavier optional extras, you can quickly free up 200 to 300 kg of extra payload. The dealer is also working toward a 2.0-ton axle upgrade for the future, which is currently still going through homologation.

Pricing structure & show deals

The Beauer X6 starts at €74,990 in standard trim. That already includes the basic living and sanitary systems plus a 100 Ah lithium battery.

The model shown at the trade fair came with the optional premium package. Normally priced at €15,000, it includes a Dometic air conditioning unit, solar panels, a 5.50-meter Thule awning, a mover, a bike rack, and a battery upgrade to 200 Ah lithium capacity.

With this full package, the regular total price for the X6 comes to €89,990. Thanks to a €6,000 show discount on the premium package at the time, the display model was available on-site for around €84,000.

If you want to check out the slide-out models in person, CarWo in Dresden is the place to go. Their showroom includes the compact Beauer X4 for anyone interested in taking a closer look.

Owner Frank even offers prospective buyers the chance to do a trial overnight stay on-site by arrangement – including use of the sauna and jacuzzi on the premises. The team also regularly shows off their vehicles at major industry trade fairs like the CMT in Stuttgart.
