Mounting a roof tent on your own? This lift makes it possible

If you've ever tried to heave a 60 or 70 kilogram roof tent onto your car roof alone or even with a second pair of hands, you know the drill: sweat on your forehead, a nagging pull in your back, and the constant worry of damaging your expensive vehicle.

Until now, your only options were often asking a neighbor for help or installing a bulky ceiling lift in your garage. But now there's a solution that completely changes the game. Nele talked to Cedric from Roof Space at the caravan live in Freiburg about a genuine world first that makes roof tent life a whole lot more relaxed.

The problem: maneuvering dozens of kilos above your head

As tempting as roof tents are, mounting them remains a real challenge. Roof tents typically weigh between 50 and 90 kilograms. Even if you think two people can easily handle it, the actual handling often turns out to be tricky. With a bit of practice it's doable, but the risk of damaging your car — or your own body — never really goes away.

The solutions so far have been limited: either you need several people — ideally one for each corner — or you install a ceiling lift in your garage. But what if you're traveling alone? What if you don't have a garage? Or what if you want to stay flexible?

The solution: the mobile roof tent lift

This is exactly where Roof Space's world first comes in. The roof tent lift was designed so you can get your roof tent onto your car — and back off again — all by yourself. And the best part: it works with almost any roof tent worldwide, up to a weight of 100 kilograms, not just with Roof Space's own products.

The design is well thought out: in storage position, the lift is just 55 centimeters slim and stands upright on four wheels against your garage wall or wherever you've got space. When you want to mount the tent, you extend the front supports to form a stable Y-shape. Using gas-pressure springs, you move the lift from vertical to horizontal position with just one hand. Then you lift it over the car and lower the tent onto the roof rack using a crank.

Once the tent is resting on the roof rack, you pull the lift back out and bolt the roof tent down as usual. The entire setup is dead simple and easy to manage completely on your own.

Clever extra functions for everyday use

The roof tent lift does more than just help with loading and unloading, though. Cedric's philosophy is clear: "You should never have to hold the roof tent in your hands again." In plain terms: it's either mounted on the vehicle or sitting on the lift.

One particularly handy feature: you can open up the roof tent while it's on the lift. Stabilized with two extra supports, you basically end up with a bed standing in your garden. But even more useful is the option to unfold the wet tent on the lift to dry after your trip, while your car is already free to use again.

This kind of storage has further perks. The tent attaches to the lift via the mounting rails and hangs freely. That means no bugs crawling in, no dirt building up, and you avoid the scratches that can happen with classic storage methods.

Which vehicles is the lift suitable for?

The roof tent lift is designed for vehicles with a roof rack upper edge between 1.50 meters and 2.30 meters. That covers everything from high-roof estates to smaller vans like the VW T-series, the VW ID.Buzz, or the Mercedes V-Class. Thanks to the threaded crank system, you get 80 centimeters of travel, so you can telescope the lift to match your vehicle's height.

Material and sustainability front and center

The construction is made of steel and comes equipped with wheels, gas-pressure springs, and a crank. Everything is bolted together, not riveted or glued. That means every spare part can be replaced. This repairability isn't just sustainable — it also significantly extends the product's lifespan.

Development and production happen entirely in-house. Cedric explains at the trade show that Roof Space is based between Bremen and Hamburg and relies on German engineering. Nothing is bought in from outside—everything is designed and built by the company itself.

The price

At 899 euros, the roof tent lift isn't exactly a bargain, but especially for solo travelers, users with less physical strength or shorter stature, and people with physical limitations, it's a huge gain in comfort—or what makes mounting a roof tent possible in the first place.

But it's worth a closer look for other roof tent fans too: think about how often you have to load and unload the tent, how much energy and nerves that costs, and the risk to your vehicle. The investment pays for itself pretty quickly.

Where to find the roof tent lift

You'll find all the info on the roof tent lift on the website of Roof Space. There, and on the company's YouTube channel, you'll also find detailed assembly videos that walk you through the handling step by step. Cedric and his team are also out at plenty of trade shows, where you can check out the lift live and try it yourself.

The lift ships starting early 2027 and will then be available through around 50 specialist dealers in Germany that already carry Roof Space products. It'll also be available across Europe.

Bottom line: more freedom, less hassle

The Roof Space roof tent lift solves a real problem that plenty of roof tent campers know all too well. Much like a mover for a caravan, it makes you independent of other people and spares your back and your car. It also comes with some clever extra functions for storage and drying.

The solid, clever construction, the availability of spare parts for repairs, and the genuinely fair price make it a worthwhile investment for anyone who regularly travels with a roof tent and doesn't want to struggle unnecessarily.

The lift is a real game-changer especially for solo travelers, women camping alone, or campers who can't (or no longer) muscle things around as easily. You get back exactly the flexibility, spontaneity, and freedom that roof tent travel is all about.
