Omnia alternatives: What other camping ovens are there?

Most camping enthusiasts know it, many have it, (almost) all love it: the Omnia camping oven. Whether grill, gas stove, (mobile) hot plate or open flame on gas, kerosene or spirit stoves – with the Omnia you can prepare delicious meals everywhere, no matter if you are traveling with the tent, camper or caravan.

And yet we campers are often also tinkerers and want to constantly improve something or try something different – for example, if you want to do without aluminum in food preparation. So it’s not surprising that more and more alternatives are coming onto the market for this extremely popular product as well – with the same hole shape as the Omnia, with baking pans without a hole in the middle, and completely different variants of ovens that are also worth taking a look at.

In this article, we’ve compiled the top 9 alternatives for the Omnia – so you can decide which model will fit best in your camping kitchen.

Omnia oven: brief overview

Enclosed you will find a short overview of the Omnia:

  • Material: aluminum, variant with ceramic-coated mold
  • Structure and capacity: a stainless steel base, an aluminum baking pan and a painted lid with small holes – the Omnia is ready. The three components of the oven described above – the base, baking pan and lid – form a self-contained system in which both top and bottom heat are emitted, thereby cooking or baking the food. The bottom heat is created by placing the flame on the stove, and the top heat is created by the hole in the middle and the special lid. With 25 centimeters in diameter, the oven offers just under two liters of capacity and weighs 350 grams.
  • Price: from about 35 euros (as of October 2023)

Omnia alternatives:

There are now many camping ovens on the market: models that are very similar to the Omnia to ovens that have a completely different design and function differently, but can also be an interesting alternative. The order of presentation is in descending order of similarity to the Omnia.

Petromax Camping Oven

The similarity to the Omnia oven is not only due to its appearance, the design and functionality are also very similar to the Omnia oven. You can also use the Petromax on the gas stove and over embers (but not on an open flame), it also works well to put a grid between the pot and the embers.

Material

The main difference from the Omnia: the Petromax oven is made of stainless steel – this is both a minus (weight) and a plus (health). Cleaning is also easier, as stainless steel is much less sensitive than aluminum.

Structure and capacity

The oven consists of three parts. A bowl at the bottom, inside it the ring shape and on top a lid – including handles, a real plus in handling. At 32 centimeters in diameter, it is larger than the Omnia, and the capacity is two liters of baking or cooking food. The Petromax weighs 1.6 kilograms, the optional baking tray an additional 680 grams. With the baking tray, you can bake, for example, a pizza without a hole in the middle or bake a casserole plus a loaf of bread at the same time.

Price

You can get the Petromax from about 65 euros (as of October 2023).

Camp4 Camping Oven

This is perfect for checking the food being cooked, for example, using a skewer or thermometer, without having to remove the lid.

Material

De Wonderpan mini oven

And now the Dutch version of the Omnia: The mini oven De Wonderpan (the Wonder Pan) applies the principle from grandmother’s time: Inner and outer pan, glass lid (or optional aluminum lid) – done. This variant is suitable for all heat sources – from wood stoves to camping gas and induction hobs. Here, however, with a small restriction: not all induction fields accept the pan, but the vast majority do, because a steel plate as a flame distributor lies between the plate and the pan, even if the pan itself is made of aluminum. Otherwise, the function is the same as the Omnia: the heat from the flame distributor rises evenly through the hole in the center of the pan and goes out through the ventilation holes.

Material

De Wonderpan is made of aluminum with a glass lid or optional aluminum lid.

Structure and capacity

At 26 centimeters in diameter, the pan is almost as large as the Omnia mold and consists of an outer pan (mini oven) and an inner pan (baking pan) and a lid.

Thanks to the iron forged, protective lacquered handles , the way from the cooking place to the table is comfortable.

Material

The baking pot is made of copper, which is the best conductor of heat and has an antibacterial effect, and the mold is made of food-grade tin – naturally non-stick, acid-resistant and heat-resistant up to 242 degrees Celsius.

Structure and capacity

The 24-centimeter version holds 1.6 liters, or space for about four rolls, eight pieces of cake or two whole fish. The larger version with 27 centimeters offers space for about six rolls, ten pieces of cake or two large fish.

Price

The frying pot costs from 149 euros in the 24-cm variant (as of October 2023).

You should not prepare highly acidic dishes due to the aluminum material, because just like with the Omnia, there is still no certainty about whether the aluminum form is harmful to health. The parts of the set you can stack perfectly into each other for storage, so that a small pack size. The biggest difference to the Omnia: there is no hole in the middle. Through the glass opening , you can easily assess the baking or cooking progress without opening the oven.

Material

The price varies between 65 and 90 Euros, currently it starts at about 75 Euros (as of October 2023).
