If you love taking your 4x4 or SUV off the beaten track, you know the problem: most caravans look completely out of place behind a rugged off-roader. Too sleek, too fragile, too campsite-tuned.

But there are alternatives: at the Caravan Live show in Freiburg, Hunter@Nature presented the Raptor XC – an off-road caravan with a clever layout and smart detail solutions.

Built Like a Car: Sturdy Aluminum Body Instead of Standard Caravan Shells

The Raptor XC is built in small series by Campravan in Turkey and sold exclusively in Germany through Hunter@Nature. It's aimed squarely at anyone who doesn't want a classic caravan trailing behind their off-road vehicle.

This caravan is built from the ground up for off-road use. Underneath sits an independent suspension with double shock absorbers, Knott brakes, and all-terrain tires (BF Goodrich All-Terrain on alloy wheels).

The cabin construction is a world away from standard caravans. The outer and inner walls are made from welded, painted aluminum, insulated with 20 to 40 mm of XPS foam. This build delivers torsional rigidity and long-term durability out on rough terrain.

Despite the heavy-duty construction, the weight stays within typical limits: with an empty weight of roughly 1,530 to 1,560 kg and a maximum permissible weight of 1,800 kg, the Raptor XC can be towed by common tow vehicles.

Cleverly Designed: The Slide-Out Concept for Extra Space

The heart of the Raptor XC is its manually extendable sleeping area, also available with an optional electric telescopic drive. Folded in, the caravan measures a compact 4.99 m including the drawbar, with a width of 1.90 m and a height of 2.60 m.

Once extended, the cabin grows to a total length of 6.90 m. The extended rear section holds a fixed double bed measuring 1.60 m × 2.10 m, framed by large panoramic windows.

A handy detail for travel days: you don't need to dismantle the bed before driving. The mattress and bedding stay put when you retract the slide-out. To close it up, you just need to shut the windows and lower the table.

The front section features a spacious curved seating area that seats up to six people. In the current third generation of the Raptor XC, the backrests are permanently fixed and no longer need to be removed when retracting the cabin. Lower the table and add an extra cushion, and you get another sleeping surface measuring roughly 90 cm × 190 cm.

A Full Bathroom on Board

Despite its compact dimensions, the Raptor XC comes with a built-in bathroom at the front of the caravan. The wet room is fully clad in aluminum and features a stainless steel floor along with a washbasin and tap.

For the toilet, the manufacturer relies on a modern separating/composting toilet (ToMTuR OGO). The sanitary setup is rounded off with a handy outdoor shower for use outside.

Self-Sufficiency & Tech: Power, Gas & Heating

In the show version on display, the Raptor XC is built for extensive off-grid power use: a large 560 Ah lithium battery (LiFePO4), paired with a 1000 W inverter and a 440 W solar system on the roof, forms the power core. Cooking is done via a portable induction hob that works both indoors and outdoors.

As standard, the manufacturer equips the kitchen with a two-burner gas stove, a compact laminate worktop, and a 76-liter fridge. For heat and hot water during off-grid use, you can choose between an Autoterm diesel heater (2D) and a gas instant water heater.

Fresh water comes from a 120-liter stainless steel tank, while the aluminum wastewater tank holds 80 liters. All onboard electronics are controlled centrally via a touch panel.

Smart detail: pop-up roof for heat regulation

Another defining feature is the large pop-up roof measuring roughly 110 cm × 170 cm above the living area. The system was specifically designed to vent built-up heat quickly in hot regions. At the same time, the roof surface offers plenty of room to mount solar panels. Standing height is about 1.86 m to 1.88 m with the roof closed, and it gains a few extra centimeters once the pop-up roof is opened.

Pricing & options

With a regular list price starting at €74,000, the Raptor XC sits in the upper segment of off-road caravans. At the most recent Caravan Live, the demo model on display was offered for €69,000. Optional extras for the Raptor XC include air suspension, a slide-out outdoor kitchen, an awning, and an electric drive for the slide-out.

Verdict

The Raptor XC from Hunter at Nature combines no-compromise off-road capability with a well-thought-out layout. The torsion-resistant aluminum build, the flexible slide-out design, the integrated bathroom, and the setup for self-sufficient power supply make this caravan a versatile companion for long trips off the beaten track.
