Prepaid SIM card in Sweden: making calls and surfing abroad

Sweden is a country that attracts visitors with culinary experiences, endless forests and relatively relaxed laws regarding free standing. But Sweden is not necessarily a cheap vacation destination. This makes it all the more important to save money in the right places. To help you stay mobile as cheaply as possible in Sweden, I have selected some good offers for you as part of my series of articles “Prepaid cards abroad“. Let’s go!

Swedish prepaid SIM cards at a glance

The country, which is popular with nature lovers, is part of the EU and is therefore subject to the EU roaming regulations that came into force in 2017. This means that you can theoretically stay online without a Swedish SIM card during your stay as long as you use a tariff with EU roaming in everyday life.

Nevertheless, it may make sense to use a Swedish tariff. Especially if you are staying in the country for a longer period of time! Because there are some pretty good offers with a lot of data volume at moderate prices.

Telia

At the top of the list is the provider “Telia“, which is represented throughout Scandinavia. Here you can get a free prepaid SIM card, “ account card , on which you can book various tariffs.

These tariffs do not have their own names. They are labeled with 100, 50, 8 or 3 GB. The 10 GB tariff is obviously particularly suitable for long-term travelers, frequent surfers and online workers.

Telia 100 GB

Price: 429 SEK / approx. 38 €
Tariff duration: 30 days
Included data volume: 100 GB
Free minutes / free SMS: included in Sweden + 500 international minutes

Telia 50 GB

Price: 329 SEK / approx. 29 €
Tariff duration: 30 days
Included data volume: 50 GB
Free minutes / free SMS: included in Sweden + 300 international minutes

Telia 8 GB

Price: 249 SEK / approx. 22 €
Tariff duration: 30 days
Included data volume: 8 GB
Free minutes / free SMS: included in Sweden + 100 international minutes

Telia has a few more other offers in stock, including a weekly tariff. This includes 1 GB data volume and unlimited calls and text messages for 7 days. Perhaps just the right thing for a short vacation.

Halebop

The mobile provider “Halebop“, which uses the Telia network and is therefore in no way inferior to the market leader, is considerably cheaper. Here too, the starter package is free of charge and can be booked with various options.

For 429 Swedish kronor, the equivalent of around €38, you get a whopping 100 GB of data plus unlimited text messages and calls within the EU and EEA. That beats any prepaid offer currently available in Germany!

Halebop 100 GB

Price: 429 SEK / approx. 38 €
Tariff duration: 30 days
Included data volume: 60 GB
Download speed: LTE
Free minutes / free SMS: Flat rate
EU roaming: available in EU / EEA

Halebop 50 GB

Price: 369 SEK / approx. 33 €
Tariff duration: 30 days
Included data volume: 50 GB
Download speed: LTE
Free minutes / free SMS: Flat rate
EU roaming: available in EU / EEA

Halebop 20 GB

Price: 319 SEK / approx. 28 €
Tariff duration: 30 days
Included data volume: 20 GB
Download speed: LTE
Free minutes / free SMS: Flat rate
EU roaming: available in EU / EEA

No matter which tariff you choose: if you don’t use up your data volume within 30 days, you automatically carry it over to the next month. Not bad at all, in my opinion!

Telenor

Finally, I’d like to introduce you to a provider that I’ve come across several times while researching prepaid SIM cards in Scandinavia: Telenor. What I have to get rid of in advance: Thank you Telenor for at least making your prepaid offers available in English! What a blessing.

But now back to the essentials. The apparently quite large company has a few options up its sleeve. One of these tariffs could be worthwhile for you, especially if you need a lot of data volume and also make a lot of calls or text messages. Once again, all tariffs are roamable and can therefore be used throughout the EU/EEA at no extra cost.

Telenor 150 GB

Price: 449 SEK / approx. 40 €
Tariff term: 31 days
Included data volume: 150 GB
Free minutes / free SMS: Flat rate within Sweden + 1500 international minutes
EU roaming: available in EU / EEA

Telenor 100 GB

Price: 349 SEK / approx. 31 €
Tariff duration: 30 days
Included data volume: 100 GB
Free minutes / free SMS: Flat rate within Sweden + 1000 international minutes
EU roaming: available in EU / EEA

Telenor 40 GB

Price: 299 SEK / approx. 27 €
Tariff duration: 30 days
Included data volume: 40 GB
Free minutes / free SMS: Flat rate within Sweden + 500 international minutes
EU roaming: available in EU / EEA

And that’s not all! Telenor also has a very cheap weekly rate for you if you are only staying in Sweden for a short time and don’t need a lot of data volume. If you are interested in the different tariffs, you can find the provider’s offers here.

Buy a Swedish prepaid SIM card

Since August 1, 2022, the registration of prepaid SIM cards has been mandatory in Sweden. Registration is possible via BankID or with a regular photo ID such as a passport, driver’s license or ID card.

The network coverage

As far as I could find out, the network coverage of the providers presented is good to very good throughout Sweden. 4G and in some cases even 4G+ are available in almost all regions. All three providers even provide a “Täckningskarta“, i.e. a map on which you can check the network coverage for your planned vacation destination in advance.

Telia + Halebop network coverage map: If you scroll down to the bottom of the home page, you will find the “Träckningskarta” button in the footer. This will take you directly to the network coverage map.

Telenor network coverage map: On the page that now opens, you will find the network coverage map roughly in the middle.

Conclusion on prepaid cards in Sweden

I am really surprised! Before I started researching for this article, I would never have thought that there were such cheap mobile phone tariffs in the prepaid sector in a relatively expensive country like Sweden.

The offers from Telia, Halebop and Telenor are all acceptable and are within a very manageable financial framework. It is therefore not easy to draw a conclusion. For me personally, either the 100 GB tariff from Halebop or the 150 GB tariff from Telenor would be worthwhile, as I need a relatively large amount of data volume due to my professional online activities.

If you don’t work with the Internet and just want to enjoy your vacation in Sweden, a smaller, cheaper tariff will probably be enough for you. Which tariff is best for you always depends on your individual requirements and usage.

So it’s all the better that Swedish providers usually have a whole range of different tariffs on the market! And most of them are even cheaper than tariffs available in Germany.

I hope that this article will help you during your next stay in Sweden and that you can use the right prepaid offer for you.
Always a good network and a great time in the land of forests and lakes.
