Private camping is not the same as free standing. Rather, it is about spending the night legally on private land whose owners have agreed to this in advance and have set up a small number of pitches. Throughout Europe, various programs now offer lists and overviews of such private motorhome pitches, and the number continues to grow.

What are private motorhome pitches?
The places to stay are mostly farms, wineries, breweries, cheese dairies or other rural businesses. In some countries, however, there are also private individuals who make their gardens available for camping.
The requirements and rules vary from provider to provider and from country to country:
- Some of these pitches are free of charge, others charge a fee per night or you have to take out a membership.
- Even if the offer is actually aimed at motorhome drivers, caravans and camper vans are often also permitted on private pitches. Permission for tents is the exception on farms and other businesses, but some platforms explicitly offer tent pitches. If in doubt, simply ask in advance.
- The services on site vary greatly: from the supply of fresh water, electricity and WLAN to shower facilities. Sometimes it is only possible to stay overnight.
- For most of the private pitches, a reservation or telephone inquiry is required in advance.
- Some of the parking space guides are available as printed books that also serve as “ID cards” on site, while others offer apps or online portals for searching for parking spaces and registering.
You can find detailed information on the individual websites as well as in the respective descriptions of the various books and platforms, which I will introduce to you in more detail in a moment.
What all programs have in common is the desire to bring the traveler closer to the respective country, its culture and its specialties. The focus is not only on hospitality, but also on environmentally friendly tourism. This also includes ensuring that guests behave in a respectful and considerate manner and observe the relevant rules of conduct.
The advantages of private parking spaces
Compared to large campsites, the personal factor prevails on private pitches. There is often only room for a few campers, so there is no need to worry about crowds. Those who want peace and quiet will get their money’s worth, as will those who would like to find out more about the farm and its regional products.
Spending the night on such sites also means getting to know the country and its inhabitants better than you would on a large campsite. Many of the hosts are happy to give their visitors an authentic impression of their region.
And you can usually sample and buy delicious specialties along the way.

Whether Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Portugal etc.: all these countries have their own pitch guides with private accommodation options. Here you can find out how the programs work and what you need to bear in mind. The following list is divided by country to make it easier for you to get an overview.
Private parking spaces in Germany
The number of programs offering private parking spaces has increased enormously in the last two years. Whether you are looking for an online-only portal or would prefer to hold a book in your hands, both are possible.
Country pleasure
The title of the program already expresses what it is all about: idyllic destinations in the countryside! Over 1400 hosts welcome caravans, motorhomes and camper vans.
How Landvergnügen works:
- You buy the book with the information on the individual pitches. With the book you will receive an annual vignette, access to the app and a membership card. Membership is always valid from March 31 of the current year to March 31 of the following year. Cost: 49.90 euros.
- Before you drive to a farm, it is necessary to give 24 hours’ notice by telephone. The yards offer between one and three parking spaces.
- If a parking space is still available in the desired yard, you can stay there for 24 hours. This length of stay is intended to ensure that other travelers can also use this parking space.
- It is not possible to dispose of gray water and/or empty the toilets.
- Whether dogs are allowed on the farms is noted in the information in the book. Four-legged friends are usually allowed.
- There is no obligation to consume or buy anything on the farms. Nevertheless, it is always welcome.
- Other services such as electricity, toilet, showers or fresh water depend on the respective farm and may cost a small fee.
Staybetter
Founded in 2020, staybetter.farm already has around 160 hosts listed throughout Germany and in some cases in neighboring European countries – and the trend is rising rapidly. The founders are pursuing a very special concept with their platform: great importance is attached to the selection of pitches and you are basically on your own – without other motorhomes as neighbors. This guarantees camping close to nature, a family atmosphere and wonderful views.
How staybetter works
- Staybetter is currently only suitable for completely self-sufficient motorhomes – there is no “camping infrastructure” such as toilets, showers or power connections on site at the hosts.
- If you have such a motorhome at your disposal, you can take out an annual membership for 45 euros (as of April 2023), which is valid from March 1 to February 28 of the following year.
- To ensure that there are always enough free parking spaces available, the number of community members per yard is fixed. Therefore you may initially be placed on a waiting list at certain times. As soon as new farms register again, new members will be admitted.
- As soon as your registration has been accepted, you will receive your personal access data and a badge for your motorhome by post, which you can use to “identify” yourself on site.
- With the access data, you can select one or more farms directly via the staybetter platform and confirm your visit.
- The sticker is linked to the vehicle and can therefore be used by different people with the same motorhome.
- The length of stay is 1 – 3 nights.
- The concept focuses on the idea of community and appreciation for the hosts. It is therefore intended that you support the farmers by shopping in the farm stores or donating to one of the so-called “farm campaigns”. There are no costs for the overnight stays themselves.
AlpacaCamping
The motto of Alpaca Camping is “Wildcamping in Legal”. The online booking platform offers you over 3000 pitches in the great outdoors, far away from overcrowded campsites. Providers of such parking spaces include wineries and farms, as well as municipalities and local authorities. The prices for an overnight stay are currently between €10 and €20 and are set by the respective provider.
How AlpacaCamping works:
- To book a place, you must register on the platform free of charge.
- In the detailed description of the individual pitches you will find information on what type of camping they are suitable for and whether services are included.
- When you make the booking, you pay the price per night stated by the provider as well as a service fee for operating the booking platform.
Hinterland
If you are looking for special outdoor accommodation, you can take a look at Hinterland. Whether you want to spend the night in a tree house, tent or camper van, the range of options is huge. These are private places that are offered directly by the owner. Prices currently range from €8 for a simple pitch or tent in a meadow to €115 for an overnight stay with up to four people in a comfortably furnished tree house.
This is how Hinterland works:
- You can view all the offers on the Hinterland website.
- On the information page for each accommodation you will find details of any services such as showers, gray water disposal or whether dogs are welcome.
- If you are interested in an offer, you can send a message to Hinterland using the inquiry form provided.
Pop-Up Camps
Pop-Up Camps was taken over by Campspace.
This portal is intended to provide campers with an alternative to overcrowded campsites and wild camping, which is banned in many countries. The aim is to convert unused open spaces into temporary campsites while complying with applicable hygiene regulations and social distancing rules. The pitches on offer in private gardens, courtyards, plots or other open spaces are designed for motorhomes, caravans, camper vans and tents.
How pop-up camps work:
- You will be shown offers on the website. Clicking on it will take you to the details page with all the relevant information.
- You can send a booking request or buy a voucher via the details page.
- The prices for the pitches are set by the landlords themselves and displayed on the website.
Pop-Up Camps was launched in April 2020. Prices range from €10 for a pitch to €95 for equipped glamping accommodation. The company has since been taken over by Campspace.
You and a view (formerly Stadt Land Bus Camping)
The motto of You and a view is “Authentic vacation in the countryside”. Here you are offered pitches for motorhomes, camper vans and caravans in the countryside and the closeness to nature has a high priority.
This is how You and a view works:
- You look for a pitch on the You and a view website.
- In the individual entries you will find detailed information about the pitch, the conditions and the hosts.
- If you like a place, you can book it via the website.
You can find pitches for €10 per night. However, some hosts charge €20 or more per night for a simple overnight stay with a motorhome, but without any services other than the pitch itself. That is a proud price.
Private parking space
The name already says what the focus of this site is: private parking spaces! However, it’s not just about places to go on vacation, but also about places to park your vehicle over the winter.
How a private parking space works:
- You can search for a pitch on the website Stellplatz von Privat.
- You will find the relevant information, such as the size of the pitch and costs, with each entry.
- On the offer page you will find the option to contact the provider directly via a message.
Good to know: Some offer you a free overnight stop on their property during your trip.
1Nite Tent
1Nite Tent has existed since 2018 and works like couchsurfing – only outdoors with a tent. Wild camping is not officially permitted in Germany, but hikers, hitchhikers, motorcyclists and cyclists in particular appreciate the feeling of freedom and adventure beyond conventional campsites. That’s why Anne-Sophie, Patrick and Micha have launched the 1Nite Tent platform, where private individuals can list their tent options. This could be a garden, a piece of forest or a meadow orchard. 1Nite Tent now has more than 400 pitches. Most of them are in Germany, but more and more locations are being added in other European countries and now even overseas.
How 1Nite Tent works:
- Visit the website 1NiteTent.com and select a pin on the map that you would like to visit.
- Your host has entered exact contact details behind the pin. So call or email in advance. The space available is also usually noted.
- You will often find additional information such as local shopping facilities, whether pets are allowed and how the use of sanitary facilities is regulated.
- You can pitch your tent in your host’s garden for one night without any obligation (except, of course, to respect the host’s rules).
- 1Nite Tent is a great way to meet new people and like-minded people and to go on vacation away from the tourist hotspots.
- So that 1Nite Tent can continue to grow, it would of course be great if you could add your property to the network – if you have the opportunity to do so.
Private pitches in Norway
The concept of private parking spaces is becoming increasingly popular in more and more countries, including Norway. The Nortrip guide offers motorhome travelers an overview of more than 90 hosts. These include museums, bakeries, cheese dairies and farm stores, as well as mountain pastures in the highlands. You can try regional specialties directly from the producers and discover real insider tips in the countryside.
This is how Nortrip works:
- You can choose between two products: the printed book including the digital guide and the app for 49 euros or just the digital guide for 43.75 euros.
- To use the digital Nortrip Guide, you need a digital membership. This is an app that you can download from the Google Play Store or the App Store.
- If you want to buy the printed book, you may have to pay import tax, as Norway is not a member of the EU. You can avoid this by purchasing the book via the webshop of Landvergnügen webshop.
- Included in the purchase in both cases is an annual membership valid from 15.03.2023 to 14.03.2024.
- Membership is tied to the vehicle and person. It cannot be transferred.
- You can stay with your hosts 24 hours a day free of charge.
- Important: The overnight stay only applies to self-sufficient motorhomes and camper vans. Caravan combinations are not permitted.
Private parking spaces in Austria
If you would like to get to know rural life in Austria, the following two programs offer you the best conditions for doing so.
Look at the countryside
The motto of Schau aufs Land is to travel through Austria and Slovenia and gain an insight into sustainable agriculture. The over 1100 pitches on offer at more than 500 businesses are close to nature and you have the opportunity to purchase regional products from businesses that work sustainably.
This is how Schauaufsland works:

- One membership per motorhome is sufficient.
- As soon as you are a member, you can access the offers via your smartphone or PC.
- The maximum stay at an establishment is 24 hours, the overnight stay itself is free of charge.
- You won’t find any infrastructure for campers at the businesses. However, some offer voluntary additional services for which a small fee may be charged.
- Schauaufsland is aimed at travelers with motorhomes as well as with caravans, tents or roof tents.
- Dogs are welcome in many establishments. Detailed information can be found in the respective detailed descriptions on the website.
Farm life
This pitch guide is aimed at anyone who wants to explore rural life in Austria. You can stay in a self-sufficient caravan or motorhome on 520 farms or wineries and get to know the businesses better. Overnight stays on the individual pitches are free of charge, all you need is the pitch guide.
This is how farm life works:
- You buy the pitch guide from Bauernleben for € 39.90 plus VAT. Shipping costs. This is valid until 31.03.2024
- With the book you receive a customer card and a vignette and can use the app.

- You are requested to register one day before arrival.
Private parking spaces in Switzerland
SWISS Hosts
Since May 2021, swiss-hosts.ch has also been a platform for private motorhome pitches in Switzerland. Currently 70 hosts with more than 200 pitches are participating. These are located on wineries and farms, but also at breweries and regional restaurants. The pitches are primarily designed for self-sufficient motorhomes, caravans, camper vans and camper buses, but 50% of the pitches already offer electricity connections and fresh water is available at around 40%.
This is how Swiss Hosts works:
Membership is available in two different variants:
The SWISS Hosts Gold membership for CHF 67 includes access to the member area, three planned camping tours through Switzerland, SWISS Hosts camping recipes (both as e-books) and a packing list for your tours.
SWISS Hosts Silver membership only includes access to the member area and costs CHF 47.
With your membership you agree to the Code of Conduct. Once you have registered, you will immediately have online access to the network with all parking spaces in Switzerland.
Once you have found a place, contact the host and wait for confirmation. Then you’re ready to go.
Membership is not automatically renewed at the end of the year. This way you can decide each time whether you want to continue them or not.
Membership is valid per vehicle.
For a small fee, some hosts will provide you with additional services such as fresh water, electricity or the opportunity to shower.
A practical app for Android and Apple devices is available to members.
Private pitches in the Netherlands
The following two programs are the best way to get to know rural life in the Netherlands.
SVR
With a total of 2000 camping farms, the following program offers a wide range of options for camping close to nature. The SVR is the “Stichting Vrije Recreatie” foundation, which translates as “Free Recreation Foundation”. Around 2000 camping farms are affiliated to it, most of which are located in the Netherlands. But there are also participating places in England, Germany, Italy and other European countries. The farms are both normal farms that have set up pitches for campers, as well as forestry operations, market gardens or fruit farms that allow camping. The SVR also has a few private individuals who offer camping pitches on their property. The focus is clearly on camping close to nature, which is why there are no typical leisure facilities.
How SVR works
- In order to take advantage of the offer, you must support the foundation as a donor. For individuals from abroad the amount is 15 euros per year, for groups 20 euros per year.
- Once you have registered as a donor, your donor card and the addresses of the participating campsites will be sent to you by post.
- The maximum price for an overnight stay on a pitch in the Netherlands is 19 euros per night for two people including electricity (in a tent, caravan or motorhome) in the low season and 21.50 euros in the high season. On the pitches outside the Netherlands you pay “a reasonable price”, as it says on the homepage.
- There are sanitary facilities on the pitches and usually also electricity connections.
- Additional fees may be charged for pets, showers, WiFi or other special services, depending on the pitch.
- You can also rent tents or apartments from some providers.
You can find a detailed description of the SVR with further information in this article.
In het groen (formerly Vekabo)
The “Association of Farmers with Campsites” has been around since 1981 and since then Vekabo has focused on vacations close to nature in the Netherlands. The offer has recently been renamed in het groen (In the green). There is a selection of over 1,400 accommodations on the site. In addition to traditional campsites, het groen also offers a range of bed & breakfasts, vacation homes and apartments as well as alternative accommodation options such as haystack pitches or tipi tents.
Here you will find suitable accommodation offers for everyone. Vekabo’s accommodation extends beyond the Dutch borders. Overnight accommodation can also be found in Belgium, France, Italy, Austria, Romania and Germany.
How it works in het groen
- Membership is not compulsory to take advantage of the services offered by in het groen.
- Open the search mask on the website and select accommodation by region and category.
- Bookings are made directly with the accommodation provider.
You can find a detailed description of Vekabo with further information in this article.

- You can stand with the respective hosts for 24 hours free of charge and are not obliged to buy their products. But of course they are happy about it.

Two different programs await you in Italy, both of which have a similar number of private accommodation options.
Greenstop24
Greenstop24 is a non-profit organization. It was founded in 2007 to promote travel by campers in the countryside. The aim is to introduce them to the region and local products. The organization now has a network of 200 providers in Italy and 50 in France.
How Greenstop24 works :
- You register as a member on the Greenstop24 website. Membership costs €30 for one year.

Agricamper Italia
With Agricamper Italia you will find pitches on farms all over the country. You can taste and buy the products produced there, such as cheese, honey, wine and olive oil. However, you are not obliged to do so. There are currently 150 hosts registered with Agricamper Italia. This is how Agricamper Italia works:
- For 34.90 euros you get a membership for one year. You can apply for this here.
- As soon as you are a member, you can log in to the members’ area on the website and search specifically for pitches.
- Membership also includes access to the Agricamper Italia app.
- The pitches are exclusively for self-sufficient motorhomes, caravans and camper vans in terms of water, electricity and waste.
- You can stand in one place for up to 24 hours.
- You should clarify in advance with the host whether dogs are allowed.
Private pitches in Portugal
Portugal has become a popular travel destination in recent years. Many campers choose to spend their winter there. But the sunny country also attracts many visitors during the other seasons. If you are looking for an alternative to the classic campsites, you can take a look at the following portal.
Portugal Easy Camp
Portugal Easy Camp is an online portal where you can book overnight stays at farms, wineries and other agricultural businesses in Portugal. To do this, you buy a product from the desired host online and enter the date on which you would like to stay there. When you arrive, you pick up the purchased product on site. Wine, vegetables, fruit and other agricultural products are on offer, with wine currently still dominating.

Info

Important: The hosts do not have the infrastructure of regular motorhome pitches. Therefore, the prerequisite for an overnight stay is that you have a motorhome with its own water supply and toilet. To dispose of gray water and waste, you must go to the appropriate places outside of the companies.
How Portugal Easy Camp works
- The first step is to select the desired host.
- In the second step, you buy the product on offer and select the date you would like to come.
- After the purchase you will receive an e-mail confirmation, which you show to the host. You will then receive the corresponding product on site. With your purchase you secure your overnight stay on the date you have specified.
- The prices for the products range between €12 and €49.
- The parking spaces are level and free of trees that could make maneuvering with the vehicle difficult.
- You will find a detailed description of each host on the website as well as further information (disabled access, WiFi, electricity available, etc.).
- You can find out whether pets are allowed in the host’s detailed descriptions.
- Arrival is only possible within the official opening hours of the respective host.
- The maximum length of stay is 24 hours.
- Most hosts are open all year round.
- Arrival without prior purchase of a product is not possible.
- The selectable languages of the website are English, French and Portuguese.
Private pitches in Spain
There is currently a well-known provider of private pitches in Spain that works on the same principle as Landvergnügen.
España Discovery
More than 200 hosts await you in Spain – spread across 10 autonomous regions – from the north to the south of the country. The offer is aimed exclusively at self-sufficient motorhome drivers who are allowed to stay on the pitches for up to 24 hours.
This is how España Discovery works:
- You buy the pitch guide, which entitles you to stay overnight on the pitches. In contrast to Landvergnügen, you do not identify yourself at the farms with a vignette, but by showing the parking space guide. The validity of the book is limited until the end of April of the following year. Shipping takes 15 days, so you should order the guide in good time. Cost: 27 euros plus postage where applicable.
- The pitch guide is multilingual: Spanish, English, French, German and Dutch.
- The book comes with an overview map of official motorhome pitches and a guide to pitches in Spanish.
- It is not possible to dispose of gray water or toilets at the businesses.
- Overnight stays on the pitches are free of charge. There is no obligation to consume or buy anything on site.
- Arrival at the desired location must take place within the working hours specified in the book.
Denmark and Sweden each have their own program that you can use to search for private pitches.
Pintrip in Denmark
What has already been successfully practiced in other countries is now also being implemented in Denmark. Via Pintrip, motorhome drivers can stay overnight on almost 750 pitches with more than 300 private hosts. The Pintrip Guide also includes a travel guide with tour suggestions, useful addresses and recommendations for experiencing Denmark as authentically as possible.
How Pintrip works
- You buy the Pintrip Guide for approx. 59.90 euros plus shipping. This results in a one-year membership that is valid from 01.03.2023 to 31.03.2024.
- You will receive the Pintrip Guide and a vignette. You must attach this to your windshield to identify yourself as a valid member.
- The guide is written in three languages: Danish, English and German.
- The book contains travel tips for places in Denmark’s most scenic regions. You will also find useful information about Bornholm and Copenhagen. A separate section of the book is dedicated to the hosts, in which they introduce themselves and their region.
- The overnight stay is free of charge. You can stay for 24 hours from the time of arrival.
- Electricity and water are available from some hosts for a small fee.
- Supply and disposal is also only possible at some hosts. Otherwise, you will find a list of suitable sanitary facilities in the guide where you can dispose of your waste.
- Dogs are allowed on most of the pitches. If certain regulations apply there, you will be informed of this in the description. All hosts require your four-legged friend to be kept on a lead.
Swede Stops in Sweden
Swede Stops is a private parking guide for Sweden. The project was launched in 2015 by Rose-Marie and Trygve Bringhammer. In their book, they currently list almost 80 hosts who offer free overnight stays in motorhomes. The hosts range from bakeries, dairies and distilleries to fisheries and small craft businesses.
This is how Swede Stops works:
- You can find out more on their website, but the pitch guides are only sent within Sweden. On the Landvergnügen website, however, you can purchase it easily and free of shipping costs for 36 euros.
- The book lists around 100 addresses of hosts.
- You will also find other useful addresses such as service stations or LPG filling stations.
Private parking spaces throughout Europe
Some portals have specialized in presenting private pitches throughout Europe. Whether you’re looking for a place to stay in Germany, Spain, Portugal or somewhere else entirely, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for in the following programs.
HomeCamper
The online portal Gamping was merged with HomeCamper at the end of 2019, but the concept remains the same. On HomeCamper you can book overnight accommodation with locals at favorable conditions throughout Europe. Private land is rented out here for camping, for up to a maximum of 20 people. The offer is aimed at anyone traveling in a tent, caravan or motorhome. In some cases it is also possible to rent accommodation, either a room or an existing tent or hut.
How HomeCamper works:
- You register on the website with your e-mail or Facebook account.
- On the homepage you can select the relevant region and then other criteria, for example swimming pool & wellness, farm & animals or activities that can be undertaken in the region.
- Simply select the right one from the search results and then send a booking request via the website. Payment is made via a secure online payment system.
- You agree the length of your stay individually with the respective hosts.
- The prices are very reasonable, but of course depend on the desired comfort.

Campspace
Campspace is a website that offers camping and other overnight accommodation on private land or in the garden. The overriding motto is to share nature with one another and to maintain respect for it. On Campspace you will mainly find offers in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, but new ones are constantly being added from other European countries too. In addition to pure camping areas, overnight stays are also offered in converted construction trailers, vintage trailers or tree houses.
This is how Campspace works:
- You will be shown the offers on the website without registering.
- Registration is required in order to book a pitch/accommodation.
- Registration takes place on the website with an e-mail address or via Facebook .
- You can then send booking inquiries to the desired provider via the website.
- Prices vary from €5 for a basic tent pitch to €85 for a tipi with hot tub.
roadsurfer spots
The rental platform roadsurfer, where you can book campervans in 12 countries, has now also developed its own pitch offer. At spots.roadsurfer.com you will find lots of great places to stay overnight in Germany and abroad (some of which are chargeable, some free), most of which you can also use if you have not rented a roadsurfer mobile. Many of these spots can be booked directly.
How roadsurfer spots work:
- Go to the website spots.roadsurfer.com and select your desired destination(s), travel period and vehicle type.
- A list of suitable places and information on the respective costs per night will appear.
- Click on the provider to see more information and check alternative availability dates.
- If you like the location, you can book the space immediately in many cases.
- If you would like to offer pitches yourself, you can also become a host .
You can find detailed information on the conditions and rules of the game in the FAQs.
Conclusion
Private camping offers you the opportunity to get to know the country intensively. Peace, nature and hospitality are fundamental components of this form of travel. Spending the night on private properties is not only inexpensive, but also varied. Whether as a supplement to the campsite or as a stand-alone accommodation option, I can absolutely recommend it.
