Technology in the motorhome

If you travel by motorhome, you know the usual headaches: worrying about theft during a quick stopover, or wondering whether your battery still has enough juice to start the engine after a few days off-grid. The company Lite Blox from Lake Constance offers a tech-driven solution for exactly these scenarios.

From motorsport to motorhome

Frederik from the Lake Constance-based company Lite Blox has worked with lithium iron phosphate technology (LiFePO4) for around fifteen years. Originally coming from holistic lightweight construction and carbon fiber part development, Lite Blox now focuses entirely on developing high-current battery systems for automotive use.

The technological foundation comes from professional motorsport, where Lite Blox supplies equipment to numerous major racing series. The company is now bringing this expertise in handling high amperages and extreme loads to the camping market.

An intelligent complete system instead of simple batteries

Lite Blox's approach differs fundamentally from conventional retrofit solutions:

  • Proprietary Battery Management System (BMS): The BMS was developed from scratch in Germany (no standard off-the-shelf parts) and keeps the battery cells operating within their specifications (voltage, current, temperature).

  • Individual assessment process: Customers provide their vehicle model, year of manufacture, and intended use (e.g. year-round use vs. seasonal operation). The right product is then selected or customized accordingly.

  • Telemetry data for longevity: Continuous analysis of real-world field data drives ongoing system improvements. As a result, the battery isn't treated as a wear part, but as a durable vehicle component meant to outlast the vehicle itself.

Starter battery vs. leisure battery: the technical difference

Starter and leisure batteries serve different purposes in a motorhome:

  • Starter battery: Delivers extremely high pulse currents to start the engine.

  • Leisure battery: Delivers continuous capacity to power onboard appliances.

High-current cells are significantly more complex to manufacture than pure capacity cells. A leisure battery is therefore usually not designed to start a vehicle. For the caravan and motorhome sector, Lite Blox offers a coordinated system of three different starter batteries and three leisure batteries (each fitted with 40, 60, or 80 high-performance round cells).

The integrated BMS also actively protects the batteries: in modern Euro 6d vehicles, which keep many control units active when doors are open or during standstill periods, the system shuts the battery down in time to prevent deep discharge.

Built-in theft protection via app

Because Lite Blox's battery management system can precisely process extremely high currents - such as during engine starts or brake energy recovery - it can also detect unauthorized start attempts.

The battery can be activated or deactivated via a free smartphone app. With theft protection enabled, the BMS reliably blocks the vehicle from starting. Even if the key is stolen or the immobilizer is bypassed electronically, the vehicle can't be driven away.

Off-grid capability and installation

Thanks to the plug-and-play system, Lite Blox components directly replace the factory-fitted parts, without the need for extra cables, charge boosters, or external charge managers.

With the lithium capacity properly sized for your needs, the system enables up to a week of off-grid use without additional solar panels on the roof. As soon as the engine starts, the BMS taps into the alternator's full output to recharge the batteries quickly.

Model variants and costs

To match different vehicles, variants with 40, 60, or 80 cells are available:

  • 40-cell variant: Suited to older or lighter vehicles.

  • 60-cell variant: The standard replacement for conventional factory starter batteries.

  • 80-cell variant: Delivers maximum power reserves for modern touring vehicles.

Battery prices range from 1,395 euros to 1,895 euros (incl. VAT). Thanks to high cycle stability and a long service life, the investment pays off over the vehicle's lifetime compared to regularly replacing conventional lead-acid or AGM batteries.
