On which roads are tolls compulsory in Slovenia?

Freeways (Avtocesta, marked with an A) and expressways (Hitre Ceste, marked with an H) are subject to tolls in Slovenia. The access roads to the highways and expressways are also subject to tolls. A special toll is charged in the Karawanken Tunnel, which connects Slovenia with Austria.

Are road sections exempt from the toll?

A few highway and expressway sections as well as all regional roads are exempt from the vignette requirement. These exempt sections include:

  • Gorenjska highway (A2): between Rosenbach (Austria) and Hrušica (Slovenia)
  • Koper expressway (H6): between Koper-Semedela and Koper-Lucija through the Markovec tunnel
  • Regional roads, also expressways, which have been downgraded to a regional road as a result of the reclassification

Which vehicles are subject to tolls?

In principle, all motor vehicles from motorcycles to trucks are subject to tolls in Slovenia. Trailers themselves are not subject to tolls, as the toll is paid by the towing vehicle. However, there are also a few vehicles that are exempt from the toll in accordance with the Toll Act. These include Blue light vehicles, military vehicles of the Slovenian army, humanitarian aid vehicles, foreign military vehicles for national defense, international peacekeeping forces and the vehicles of toll road operators. What types of tolls and vignettes are there?

There are two types of toll in Slovenia:

  • Motor vehicles up to 3.5 t: Toll by means of e-vignette
  • Vehicles over 3.5 t: route-dependent toll calculation via transponder DarsGo.

In Slovenia, the vignette is only available as an e-vignette (e-Vinjeta); there is no longer an adhesive version for the windshield. The vignettes are based on the following toll classes:

Mautklasse
Fahrzeuge
1
einspurige Kfz (Motorräder) mit einer Spurbreite < 50 cm
2a

You can currently buy vignettes with four different validity periods: a one-week vignette, a one-month vignette, a six-month vignette and an annual vignette. The annual, six-month and monthly vignettes are valid from the day specified by the customer at the start of validity until the end of the same day in the following year, six months or month. The weekly vignette is valid for seven consecutive days from the start of validity.

Vehicles that exceed the maximum permissible weight of 3.5 tons, such as large motorhomes and trucks, are charged a distance-based toll via a DarsGo transponder, which is used to automatically settle the charges at the toll stations.

Special case: Karawanken tunnel

The Karawanken tunnel, the longest road tunnel in Slovenia at just under eight kilometers, is exempt from the general vignette requirement – here you have to pay a special toll . Payment is made at the Hrušica toll station and can be made by cash, credit card or debit card.

Where can I buy the e-vignettes and the DarsGo box?

The e-vignette is available for all vehicle categories at filling stations near the border, at DARS points of sale and online, for example at vintrica.com available. You can get the DarsGo box at the sales points in Slovenia, but you can also order it in advance by post. You can register and set it up in advance via https://www.darsgo.si/portal/ or on site at a service station when you buy it. If you buy the box locally, you are allowed to cross the border and drive to the first service station without a toll box. The service stations can be found along the entire road network, with the major distribution points located in the cities of Ljubljana, Maribor, Obrežje, Fernetiči, Gruškovje and Hrušica.

What payment options are there for tolls?

Vignettes for the toll roads can be purchased online from Vintrica and paid for via PayPal, credit card or online banking. For the DarsGo toll box and vignette purchase on site, you can use the usual means of payment; for toll payment via the DarsGo box, you can opt for a pre-paid or post-paid system when setting up.

How is the toll calculated in Slovenia?

Motorhomes < 3.5 tons

For motorhomes under 3.5 tons, the amount of the toll depends on the classification into toll class 2a or 2b and the type of vignette, i.e. the validity period you choose.

Motorhomes > 3.5 tons

For motorhomes and other vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of more than 3.5 tons, the toll is calculated using the DarsGo box. The vehicles are subdivided again according to the number of axles and weight, after which the toll is calculated.

Caravan combinations

The weight and height limits according to the toll classes also apply to trailers. However, trailers are not subject to separate tolls – the towing vehicle is decisive for the calculation.

Passenger car

The toll for passenger cars is calculated on the basis of the vehicle category and the corresponding toll class.

How much does the toll cost in Slovenia? – Prices for the year 2025

Vignette prices for vehicles < 3.5 tons

The vignette prices for 2025 are communicated with the following values:

  • Class 1: 8 euros (7-day vignette), 32 euros (6-month vignette), 58.70 euros (annual vignette)
  • Class 2a: 16 euros (7-day vignette), 32 euros (monthly vignette), 117.50 euros (annual vignette)
  • Class 2b: 32 euros (7-day vignette), 64.10 euros (monthly vignette), 235 euros (annual vignette)

Toll prices for vehicles > 3.5 tons

The toll prices for vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons are calculated via the DarsGo system, taking into account the number of kilometers driven, the number of axles and the Euro emission class.

Toll costs for the Karawanken tunnel

A special toll is payable for passing through the tunnel; the prices for 2025 vary depending on the source. You pay the toll on site at the Hrušica toll station or via the DarsGo box if you are driving a vehicle over 3.5 tons. Incidentally, the route toll applies to a single journey through the tunnel and is not counted as a return journey. There is a points card for frequent drivers, which makes the toll per route slightly cheaper.

What special regulations apply to tolls in Slovenia?

In Slovenia, you can transfer a valid e-vignette to another license plate, but only if the new vehicle is in the same vehicle category.

What are the penalties and fines for not paying the toll?

There is no chance of “forgetting” to pay tolls in Slovenia: You need an e-vignette as soon as you enter a toll road, the toll system is monitored by video surveillance and action is taken immediately in the event of violations. Heavy fines of between 300 and 800 euros can be the consequence of a missing or incorrect vignette for Slovenia.
