Our northern neighboring country is a popular destination for vacations in vacation homes or camping vacations. The journey is not particularly far and German is even spoken in many places. By and large, the traffic regulations in Denmark are very similar to those in Germany. Nevertheless, Denmark also has its own special features in road traffic. Speed limits, tolls and the Danish parking disk regulations – I would like to go into these and other traffic rules in more detail below to help you have a stress-free vacation.

Speed limit Denmark

Denmark’s traffic regulations naturally include speed limits. But how fast can you drive in Denmark? You can find an overview here:

Maximum speed in Denmark for cars and motorhomes up to 3.5 t

  • In urban areas: 50 km/h
  • Out of town: 80 km/h
  • Expressways: 80 km/h
  • Freeways: 130 km/h

Speed limit in Denmark for motorhomes over 3.5 t up to 7.5 t

  • In urban areas 50 km/h
  • Out of town 70 km/h
  • Expressways: 80 km/h
  • Freeways: 80 km/h

  • In urban areas 50 km/h
  • Out of town 70 km/h
  • Expressways: 70 km/h

(exception: 100 km/h with an extra sticker, which is available at test centers in Denmark)

  • Out of town 70 km/h
  • Expressways: 70 km/h
  • Freeways: 80 km/h

Parking in Denmark

There are special rules in Denmark, not only for driving but also for parking. I present the most important ones here:

  • On highways and country roads, parking is only permitted in designated bays and parking spaces.
  • No parking on cycle paths and crosswalks.
  • Yellow curb marking: No stopping and parking
  • A distance of 3 meters must be kept from solid stripes .
  • A minimum distance of 10 meters must be maintained in front of or behind junctions and crossroads.
  • A distance of at least 12 meters must be maintained in front of and behind bus stops.
  • A black parking sign (white P on a black background) indicates a private parking space. Here you must observe the other information on the signs.
  • As in Germany, public parking spaces are signposted with a white P on a blue background. Whether a parking fee is charged here or parking is free of charge can be seen from the other signs. The indication “timer” (e.g. 1 timer) means hours and indicates how long you are allowed to park at this location.

A special feature of Denmark is its parking disk. The Danish parking disk looks different from the German one. It can be purchased locally, but it is not absolutely necessary to buy a Danish parking disk. The German parking disc is also valid in Denmark for vehicles registered in Germany. However, you must make sure that you set the display needle to the half hour closest to the time you start parking. For example, if you arrive at the parking lot at 14:22 or 14:40, the parking disk must be set to 14:30. From 2.46 pm, the hand must be set to 3 pm. You are not allowed to use the quarter-hour markers in Denmark!

Parking violations are relatively expensive in Denmark. Accordingly, you should pay attention to the correct signage to avoid fines.

Dimensions of vehicles / restrictions on vehicle size

In Denmark, there is a maximum width of 2.55 meters for trailers/caravans (with load) and a maximum length of 12 meters (with drawbar). The combination of towing vehicle and trailer may not exceed a maximum length of 18.75 meters. Exceptions are only possible after approval. These traffic regulations apply to both locals and tourists.

Tolls in Denmark

Tolls do not play a particularly important role in Denmark. Only the Storebaelt Bridge (Great Belt Bridge, between Zealand and Funen) and the Öresund Bridge (between Denmark and Sweden) are subject to tolls. The toll charges depend on the length of the vehicle. You can find more information in our article Tolls and vignettes in Europe.

Blood alcohol limit in Denmark

Denmark has a drink-driving limit of 0.5 per mille. Non-compliance entails severe penalties. A fine of one month’s earnings must be expected for even a minimal excess.

High visibility vests in Denmark

In Denmark, there is no obligation to carry high-visibility vests in the vehicle or to wear them in the event of a breakdown. However, this is strongly recommended for your own safety.

In contrast to the safety vests, a warning triangle and a first aid kit are compulsory when driving in Denmark.

Low emission zones in Denmark

There are environmental zones(Miljøzonemærke undtaget) in some parts of Denmark such as Copenhagen and Frederiksberg, Aalborg, Aarhus and Odense. However, only diesel-powered buses and trucks over 3.5 tons are affected; there is an exemption for diesel-powered motorhomes over 3.5 tons.

Summer tires, winter tires and snow chains in Denmark

  • There is no general winter tire requirement in Denmark.
  • The use of snow chains is permitted in Denmarkif the road is covered with snow or ice throughout or almost throughout.
  • Spikes are permitted from November 1 to April 15, but must then be fitted on all four tires.
  • The tread depth of vehicle tires must be at least 1.6 mm.

Driving with children in Denmark

Children under 1.35 meters must be secured with a restraint system appropriate to their age and size. Children under 3 years of age may sit in a child seat on the front passenger seat; in the case of rear-facing child seats/baby carriers, make sure that the airbag is switched off. Children over the age of 3 and under 1.35 meters must sit in a child seat in the rear seat. Take a look at our tips for camping with children in Denmark.

Other important traffic rules in Denmark

  • In Denmark, dipped headlights must be used all year round . Daytime running lights are only permitted during the day and in very good visibility conditions.

  • Talking on the phone while driving is prohibited in Denmark. The use of a hands-free system is permitted.

Good to know

  • Town signs at the entrance to the town are white with a black border.
  • “Ensrettet” is the reference for a one-way street.
  • Unless otherwise signposted, the driver on the traffic circle has right of way. Anyone leaving the traffic circle must signal.
  • Information on the Danish parking disk can be found above under“Parking”.
  • In Denmark, a breakaway cable / safety cable is not mandatory for caravans. You can find out more about“Breakaway cable” here.
  • Every country has its own special traffic signs. Denmark also has its own special features. Here you will find an overview of all traffic signs that are used in Denmark.
  • What you should consider when camping in Denmark with a dog

I hope this overview of traffic rules in Denmark is helpful for you. As you can see, the traffic regulations in Denmark are generally very similar to those in Germany. Nevertheless, it is certainly good to know a few things about driving and what you need to be aware of. I wish you a good and safe motorhome or car trip in Denmark.
