Mosquito net: what you need to look out for
A mosquito net is a net-like fabric made of fine mesh. The nets are usually made of nylon, cotton or polyester and have such tiny meshes that the penetration of insects is severely restricted or completely prevented.
A mosquito net helps you to enjoy warm summer evenings at home or when traveling in peace and makes your bed mosquito-proof. It protects you from unpleasant insect bites in summer or in tropical countries. A mosquito net therefore makes absolute sense, especially when traveling in areas with malaria mosquitoes, but also at home. The best way to find a suitable model is to use our buying guide.
What makes a good network?
If you want to buy a good mosquito net that will ideally last a few years, then you should know the most important quality criteria for good nets.
- The material of the net – whether cotton or synthetic fiber – should be as thin-fibered and breathable as possible.
- Also pay particular attention to the mesh size/mesh count. The WHO recommends a mesh size diagonal of 2 mm to protect against mosquito-borne diseases.
- It is also important that the net fits your bed size/patio size/camping bus size (or wherever you want to use the mosquito net).
Shape
When searching for an insect net, you will probably come across different types of nets. Here you will find an explanation of the three most common forms:
- Pyramid shape/round: Pyramid-shaped nets fall over the sleeping area in a pyramid shape. A major advantage of these nets is that they are only attached to the ceiling at a single point. As they are lightweight, they can also be attached with adhesive tape or a thumbtack. What’s more, these nets usually have a small pack size and are easy to transport. However, they only offer limited space; mainly only one bed can be protected with them. As the walls of the net run at an angle and are also movable due to their low weight, protection against mosquito bites can also be somewhat limited. The respective ceiling height must also be taken into account here. If the ceiling is too low, the net cannot be hung.
- Box-shaped/angular: Box-shaped nets are suspended from four to six points and require strong hooks, which makes attachment somewhat more complex. In addition, these nets are heavier and have a larger pack size than pyramid-shaped nets. However, they offer much more space and can also protect a large double bed. Thanks to the vertical side walls, they also provide better protection against mosquito bites, better air circulation and more freedom of movement.
- Dome shape: Dome-shaped nets are reminiscent of a tent. A major advantage is that they do not need to be fixed, as these nets are set up like a pop-up tent. They also offer great all-round protection and can also be used for sleeping outdoors. However, these nets are also a little more cumbersome to pack and transport, as they contain somewhat heavier tent poles and have a larger pack size.
Which shape is best for you depends entirely on your needs and the intended use of the net. If you like to spend the night in nature or in the open air, then a dome-shaped tent net is the best choice for you, especially if you are traveling by car. If, on the other hand, you are backpacking or trekking around the world, a light and small pyramid-shaped net is recommended. If you simply want to protect your double bed at home, then a box-shaped net would probably be most suitable for you.
Size
Always choose the size of the net to match the size of your sleeping area so that it is protected all around.
The rule of thumb is: the bigger, the better. This is because the larger the net, the less likely you are to accidentally touch it in your sleep and get stung.
Material
Mosquito nets are made of either synthetic or natural fibers. Both have advantages and disadvantages, but nylon or polyester are the most common materials today.
- Natural fibers: Natural fibers such as cotton are often less permeable to air than synthetic fibers, so heat quickly builds up underneath. Cotton also tends to become matted and quickly absorbs odors. As it is also not water-repellent and retains moisture, cotton nets should only be used in dry areas, under roofs or indoors.
- Synthetic fibers: Synthetic fibers such as polyamide, polyester or nylon are easy-care and moisture-resistant/quick-drying. They are also stable and tear-resistant and weigh very little. They are therefore particularly suitable for traveling or outdoor activities.
Mesh size / number of meshes
You should definitely bear this point in mind when choosing a net! If the meshes are too large, small insects and mosquitoes can get through. If they are too small, the air can hardly circulate. So what is the right mesh size?
First of all, it is important to know that the mesh size is specified in a special unit of measurement, the MESH number (mesh per square inch). It indicates the number of meshes per square inch. The larger the mesh unit, the smaller the mesh of the net.
Especially when it comes to protection against dangerous diseases such as malaria, yellow fever and dengue fever, the minimum mesh size should be at least 25 holes per cm² according to the World Health Organization (WHO ) , which corresponds to > 156 MESH and a mesh size diagonal of 2 mm.
You can use this rule of thumb as a guide for the stitch width/MESH count:
- Mosquito nets for medium insect levels (Central and Southern Europe): 210-230 MESH (impregnation optional)
- Mosquito nets for insects with risk of infection (tropics): >156 MESH (impregnation recommended)
- Mosquito nets for countries with tiny insects (northern black flies or midges): 000 MESH (impregnation optional)
Mosquito net with or without entry
Some mosquito nets have entrances at the front in the form of two open, overlapping net ends. The fact that the ends of the net are on top of each other is intended to prevent mosquitoes from entering the tent through the opening. If the mosquito net has no entrance, you will have to lift it up to get in or out.
It may sound practical to have an entrance, but the overlapping mesh ends can easily shift or open, e.g. if there is a draught from an air conditioner or fan. You may also accidentally open the fly net while sleeping. A mosquito net without an entrance is therefore safer. However, there are some manufacturers who have fitted a zipper at the entrance so that you can close the tent completely after getting in.
Mosquito net impregnation: yes or no?
Many mosquito nets are treated with an anti-mosquito agent for additional mosquito protection and are therefore available already impregnated. This is to prevent mosquitoes from biting through the fly net, as they are killed by the chemical substance.
So you will definitely increase your protection factor if you use an impregnated net.
However, with an impregnated net you should bear in mind that the insecticides used are not entirely harmless. This can result in allergic reactions, burning eyes or irritation of the mucous membranes. In addition, the impregnation only lasts until the mosquito net is washed. The insecticide is then lost by around 40 percent. Depending on the type of insecticide, there is also a limited lifespan, as the substances also evaporate over time.
Does impregnation make sense? In any case! The WHO also recommends the use of an impregnated mosquito net when staying in risk areas where infection with malaria, Zika or dengue is possible. If you are traveling outside these regions, it is not absolutely necessary to impregnate your mosquito net.
You can also easily impregnate your net yourself. To do this, simply spray a chemical or, even better, a natural insecticide on it and allow it to air out well before first use (at least one day). With large mosquito nets in particular, you are probably wondering how you should attach the net to the ceiling with four or six suspensions. The good news is that most fly nets are supplied with cords, hooks and/or adhesive strips. You pull the cords through the tabs of the net and then attach them to the ceiling or to your cupboard or lamp using hooks.
However, especially when traveling, you may not have enough fastening options. In this case, there are several ways to solve the problem:
- Tip 1: Always take 10 meters of solid cord, tacks and adhesive hooks or adhesive strips with you on vacation.
- Tip 2: Get creative. Hang pictures from the wall to attach your net to the nails or use lamps, windows, coat hooks or ceiling fans to stretch the strings of your net and hold it in place.
- Tip 3: If you can’t find anything to attach your net to, you can knot the ends of the strings into loops and stick them to a cupboard or wall with a piece of adhesive tape. Stick two strips of adhesive tape on top of each other like an X.
