A week without heating and cooking facilities – not a walk in the park with night frost and daytime temperatures of around 5 to 8 degrees. At least that was the opinion of Nele and Jalil, who were able to get a gas bottle in Spain, but no suitable adapter. The salvage then had to be brought in from Germany – expensive shipping costs included.

To make sure this doesn’t happen to you, today we’ll give you an overview of the standards and ways in which you can easily obtain a gas supply in other European countries.

Gas adapter set for foreign cylinders

You need this set in Europe to connect a bottle from another country to your German camper. We always have it with us when we travel. It is suitable for the following countries:

Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Scotland, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland

What do I need this gas adapter for?

Your caravan or motorhome is equipped with a German gas system if you bought the vehicle here. In some countries, you will also need a tapping adapter/pressure regulator. For example, the ones shown in the picture in Spain and Portugal. Attention, in some countries there are different ones for different gas companies.

You can often buy these in DIY stores and well-stocked camping stores, as well as by mail order in Germany.

As you often cannot exchange or refill German gas cylinders abroad, you will need appropriate adapters to connect foreign gas cylinders to your German gas system.

Alternatively, you can buy gas adapters to fill your German gas cylinder abroad. In this case, you will need both filling nozzles to fill the cylinders and additional removal adapters to connect and use the gas cylinders abroad. So the adapters from above and this one:

  • EU-weit einsatzbereit – Das PELMOS Füllset besteht aus 4 praktischen Adaptern für Gasflaschen….
  • Rostfrei & langlebig – Unsere Gasflaschenadapter werden in einem speziellen Verfahren aus…

If you combine both sets, your gas supply in other European countries should be absolutely secure.

Filling gas cylinders that are not fuel cylinders is prohibited in many countries, at least at filling stations. Although this is sometimes done “under the table” anyway, it is not advisable for safety reasons. It is better to find out in advance and only have the tank filled at authorized locations.

The different types of gas adapters

The need to carry different gas adapters is relatively easy to explain: There are four different types that you can stick to. It always depends on which gas supply you want to use for your camping vacation. The following types of gas supply are available to you:

Adapter for right/left-hand thread

As the name suggests, this is either a thread that can be turned to the right or alternatively to the left. This varies depending on the country and hose system and is intended to increase safety when handling gas. However, most gas systems have left-hand threads.

When camping, the adapters for cylinders vary depending on the gas cylinder used. In Europe, there are four different adapters (“transition pieces”) that you can buy in a so-called Euro set. With these four devices, you are covered in every country (see below) and can connect foreign gas cylinders in your caravan or motorhome.

Tank bottles

These are not at all uncommon and are the best energy suppliers when camping. Because you can fill them up at all LPG filling stations. If you are traveling abroad, you will need suitable European filling nozzles for the petrol pumps.

Cartridges

If you take gas cartridges with you on vacation, you do not need a special gas adapter. The cartridges are disposable containers that are filled with liquid gas and can be used for cooking. As a rule, you use these until the cartridge is empty and then buy a new one.

Are the gas adapters for tapping and filling different?

Yes, the adapters for removing and filling the gas are different. To fill up, you need filling nozzles that are suitable for all authorized filling stations – even abroad – and can use them to refill your tank. In principle, this could also be used to fill the German gas cylinders taken along.

However, as mentioned above, this is prohibited in most European countries and should only be done by qualified personnel. To remove and use the gas from foreign cylinders, you will need spacers, which are available in different sizes depending on the country.

What different adapter sizes are available for removal?

There are a total of four different connections that you will need for your vacation to connect the foreign gas cylinders in your caravan or motorhome. You can use the following lists as a guide:

EntnahmestutzenAnschlussGasflaschenanbieter
D1M10x1 AußengewindeVetta Gas
D2W20x1/1422LHH InnengewindeLiqui, Butan, Agip, Mi, Pibi

D4W21.8x1/1422LH InnengewindeNordisk-Flaskegas, Calor, Botto, Esso, Thermo, Drachen, Primus, Butan, Oban

Gas adapters in other countries

As previously mentioned, for some countries you will need a different gas cylinder than is used in this country, as well as the corresponding adapter. Below is a short list of which gas cylinders and adapters are used where:

  • Spain D4
  • Norway D3
  • Italy D1, D2, D3 or D4
  • Croatia D4
  • France D4
  • Sweden D3
  • Poland uses the same gas cylinders as Germany
  • Holland D4
  • Portugal D3
  • Czech Republic D4
  • Switzerland D1, D3 or D4

Note for Norway and Sweden: In order to connect a Norwegian or Swedish bottle to the German system, you will need another adapter in addition to the D3 adapter. You can buy this locally in the respective country, for example in a DIY store or from a gas cylinder dealer.

In both Norway and Sweden, you can get a rental bottle for your stay from the company Aga, of which there are numerous branches. You can also get the required adapter there. Alternatively, you can have your German cylinder filled by the company LPG Norge in Norway. Here you can find a map with filling and exchange stations for German gas cylinders in Sweden (no guarantee of accuracy on our part, as external link).

Gas supply in Europe

The use is clear: people use gas cylinders when camping or traveling to cook or get hot water. The composition of mobile camping gas, which is often made from a mixture of propane and butane, differs slightly from country to country.

In principle, however, you can expect a similar mixing ratio – so the gas used will not usually cause you any problems. But if you look into the gas supply in advance of a camping trip abroad, the mixing ratio is not the only difference you will notice. After all, the right connection is even more important for the supply. In Europe, you usually have no problems with the basic gas supply in the individual regions.

You can get gas cylinders at most filling stations. Only the different connections of the gas cylinders may present a few hurdles. Unfortunately, there is currently no Europe-wide standard for this, which is why you have to rely on gas adapters.

In summary: Four connections allow you to keep an overview

Ultimately, with a little background knowledge, it’s not that difficult to keep track of the common adapters and be prepared for all eventualities. With the previous list as a cheat sheet, you can’t be surprised by anything. There are a few other things to bear in mind when it comes to gas in motorhomes, such as the gas test for motorhomes and caravans. Here you will find the most important regulations, procedures and costs for gas testing.
