Compact, maneuverable, comfortable: the demand for small motorhomes and campervans is constantly increasing in the camping market. Especially for traveling alone or as a couple , the manufacturers offer an individual selection of models, which on the one hand do not lack the feeling of adventure, camping and nature, but also offer the comfort of a bathroom, usually with toilet and shower, as well as sufficient space for sitting and sleeping, despite all minimalism. In the following article, we present five models in each of the categories “small motorhome” and “campervan” – the latter are usually in the range between 5 and 6 meters.

Small motorhome, compact campervan – the advantages

But first to the term “small camper”: There is of course no clear definition. In this article, we have set our degree measure to less than 6 meters vehicle length. This short length also has a number of advantages:

  • Low total weight

  • High flexibility

  • Convenient handling

  • Acquisition costs

Niedriges Gesamtgewicht

For a small motorhome with a resulting lower weight, you need less fuel when driving and you can drive it with your normal B driving license (according to the new driving license directive up to 4.25 t).

High flexibility

With an appropriately small camper, you are more flexible when driving, even on narrow, winding roads, when maneuvering and parking, as well as when parking and on parking spaces, because you simply need less space. You can save money at some campsites because, if you are charged according to pitch size, you will pay less with your small motorhome.

Convenient handling

A small motorhome is easier and more comfortable to maneuver – this fact is obvious and cannot be denied even with all the technology and comfort of larger vehicles. You also need less space when looking for a shelter (for the winter).

Acquisition costs

Smaller + lighter = cheaper? This calculation only works to a limited extent if you compare the acquisition costs with similar models or at least with models of the same (quality) manufacturer. There are certainly motorhomes of 6 meters in length that offer extremely comfortable equipment and extensive technical refinements – so that they can be more expensive than an 8-meter entry-level model from another manufacturer even at the basic price. It therefore depends on what you require in terms of additional features and material quality.

In this section, we present five models from the “small motorhome” category – all individual, special and very different variants, sorted in ascending order of price.

A brief digression: What really is the smallest “motorhome” in the world?

In Japan, people know what little space and living space mean. So it is not surprising that the smallest motorhome in the world – in a very flexible definition of a motorhome – comes from this country: the Honda N-Van Compo. It measures just 3.40 m – functionality is the top priority here. The interior is used down to the last centimeter: Kitchen with fridge and microwave, sink, shelves, TV – everything is built into the 3.40 m space. The sleeping area is very cramped, but there is an integrated roof tent as an alternative. And what does the smallest of the small cost? The price is currently quoted from 16,500 euros . The difficulties here are that the camper is currently only available in Japan and it is a right-hand drive vehicle – because Japan drives on the left.

Short presentation of the Honda N-Van Compo in the video:
